RIP 5 speed transmission 12k miles

Holy sheet..... normal use or where you hard on it? im about to hit the 10k mark and seeing these tranny issues is starting to get me worried....

I would not worry. I have 27k hard miles and all I have done is change the fluid.
I think I have seen a total of like 3 cases of a f17 failing on here. Look at how many if us who don't have any issues. Besides that look at the 6 speed. At least 1/3 of them have some sort of issue.

I disagree.
They sold what, 80,000 Sonic's for the 2012 year? We have way too small of a sample here of both transmissions to claim 1/3 of them have issues.
Both of my 6 speeds operate smooth.

Ya your right. Our what 4000 some odd members is way to small of a group to Accurately judge.
And most of these threads are the same people complaining about the 1-2 grind. Mine does it every once in a while, but I don't consider it an issue yet. There's no real reason to wind it out in first gear anyway,* and as long as I avoid doing so, it operates rather smoothly.
I've decided that its better to short shift to second and take advantage of the boost that comes with higher load. Besides,outside of SOF, the majority of owners probably don't drive it like they stole it and never cause the issue to surface in the first place.

i have no idea what went through the case, i didn't really have to time to look around happened in the middle of an intersection on a divided highway, so the goal was get the car out of the interaction with out getting hit.
the service report says something about the spyder gears. it was on the back side of the transmission near the under the shift cables, took me a while to find the hole.
and i wasn't being rough on it, i was actually being careful i had a full car of people and was on my way home from a large dinner. however i had noticed fluid appearing on my transmission for the last month or so and my dealer told me they didn't know where it was coming from, since it was the wrong color for any fluid in the car. being as it failed near that sensor i am wondering if it had a crack there and had been leaking for a while and finally got low enough on fluid after an 800 mile nonstop drive down to north Carolina to fail.

On the note of transmission issues, I agree that we have too small a sample to get a reliable number. Besides, people use the forum as an avenue to explore these problems. Most people don't post that everything is going well. As they say, "Only trouble is interesting."

once i found metal chunks in the engine bay i searched for a good half hour to find the hole, because i wanted a picture. that picture also made it easier to explain to the tech that there is a hole in the transmission.
