Speaker Size?

Think it's time to start doing something about the sound... or lack of it in my Sonic.

Thinking Amp and Speakers. I did a search, and think that the back speakers are 6.5," but I can't seem to find anything on the front's.

Any help would be great - thanks guys.

Not weird at all really, it has to do with the frequencies they reproduce well.
(They are also said to be way under-driven as some have pumped more juice to them and said they woke right up)

Higher frequencies are very directional as well as I don't think the doors make very good enclosures to help them reach low even if they were capable.
For some reason they're mounted in the rear doors(iirc) - Maybe they sound ok in the back?

So you think an amp will do it? Or should I get speakers to go with it too?

should look around here, I know someone has put an amp on their rears here somewhere.

Honestly I'd probably do amp and custom speakers of some sort but you can start with the amp (turned down) then add speakers later.

really its not the speakers in the rear thats an issue, the radio has them only to produce lows/mids, but yeah search and you will see what we have done so far to fix these issues :)

LOL - You guys always say to do a search... I must be the worst "search" guy on the planet, as I can't find all that much. :) Any links would be great!

Anyway, I think I have pretty much decided on getting an amp, and then replacing the rear speakers at min, maybe all at best, and then getting a sub.

I have a ton to learn, but I am leaning toward a D amp as they are small and don't produce much heat... Speaking of small, today after looking over my car (sedan), trying to figure out where to put the amp and a sub the car for the first time seemed very small lol.

Thanks for all your help guys! I am going to see a "dude" next week to go over it all, but I get paid monthly so nothing is going to happen till next month.

I'll let you know how it all turns out.

As far as amps go, just make sure you get something *good.
If you look at something that's like 500 watts and has a 10 amp fuse - pass. ;)

From what I understand... and just know I only started looking at this stuff lately, that will not do it hotness. The stereo itself isn't sending enough power to the speakers.

I think were you to add a sub-woofer with a built in amp, it would go miles if you wanted to go on the cheap. Ultimately for me, I'll start with an amp.

I hope that helps... I hope that's right lol.

I sent an e-mail to (get this) Sonic Electronix with a list of components I was thinking about getting, asking if they thought it would blend well or if they have any other ideas.

I went a little overboard and surely, I don't "need" all this equipment but you know...

Here is the list - what do you guys think?


Amp: Rockford Fosgate R600-5 - Rockford Fosgate R600-5 (R6005) 600W RMS Prime 5-Chan Amplifier

Sub-Woofer: Pioneer TS-SWX251 - Pioneer TS-SWX251 (TSSWX251) Shallow Loaded 10" Enclosure TSSW251

Speakers: Rockford Fosgate Power T1652 - Rockford Fosgate Power T1652 6-1/2" T1 2-way Coaxial Car Speakers
And a pair of Infinity Kappa 69.9i - Infinity Kappa 63.9i (KAPPA 639I) 6.5" 3-way Kappa Car Speakers

Plus perhaps an equalizer, if I can find a place to put it in this small car.

I'm a huge fan of RF, so the 4 channel and speakers are great. I would recommend sticking with one brand for your speakers, out of pure "brand loyalty" I suppose. Meaning, I would get 2 sets of the RF speakers.

As for the sub, is there any reason other than cost that you went with a shallow mount sub? Those are generally for trucks and other vehicles with no trunk space.

Either way, it all will play nice together and should sound quite nice!

To do that job correctly you need to add a JL Audio clean sweep. It will take care of the insanely loud door chimes and crazy ticking turn signal clickers and clean the signal coming from your stock radio. Fast Fred

Do you the job correctly you do NOT need JL anything. If you replace the radio, all will be well.

Otherwise, you just need any type of audio controller, not necessarily a JL.


To whoever asked the question before, to fix the quiet back speakers, changing your radio does wonders. When I replaced my headunit, it made a WORLD of difference.

Thanks for the input - yeah I went with the shallow mount only because I want as small as possible. Sure we have decent sized trunks in the sedan but it'll "full-up" quickly what with my golf clubs and all the kid sh... stuff that seemingly never gets removed lol.

Better yet I can place it facing down so that the likelyhood of me breaking the speaker is less :).

I don't want to change the radio actually - so...

As for the clean sweep fast fred, do you think a little equalizer would do the job?
