something to prevent the camshaft from turning when removing the belt?

Twin cams it's a must. Gerry rigged usually my way verses a special tool. Bit of a masochist i guess

So I did some digging. And I found the right tool. And yes it's basically the same as the eBay page. Freedom racing has them. . Two versions, one plastic for 79.00 and a nice aluminum version for 300. I opted for the plastic one. I ordered it today and it will be here tomorrow.
FYI my timing belt has 113k on it and it still looks new. No dry rot and nice and pliable.

So even though I am having a local shop handle the replacement job I have been scouring over the docs that I have. It appears the timing belt goes in between the motor mount ears and does NOT need to be removed. Had I payed attention to this it would have made a nice weekend project.

I saw a post of a photo on , maybe an AVEO forum . The guy took 2 zip ties / wire ties and tied the 2 cam pulleys together . Tightly so they could not move . Before he removed the belt . Cut & remove the ties , when the install is finished . Before you start to reinstall all the covers .
Another tip I have read , then you mark each cam pulley t the top with white paint / marker and the old belt . Then mark the flywheel pulley and the belt .
With everything marked , remove the old belt & transfer the marks to the new belt . Replace all the parts and pieces , align all the marks together .
My 2015 Sonic 1.8l has the water pump driven from the serpentine belt . It is not under the front cover & not driven by the timing belt . So , it can be serviced independent of the timing system .

Do not forget , you should be also replacing the idler and tension pulley . As well as the belt . And the water pump , if it is driven by the timing belt .
If one of those malfunctions , you are still up a creek . :-(

Me , personally , when it comes time to do the timing belt , I plan to do the marks , no mater what tooling I have or do not have .
And I already have zip ties on the truck .
But , do as you feel best .
When the time comes , I will probably order a Gates kit form RockAuto.com . Unless some one knows a reason not to buy Gates ?

Well this thread is really funny.
Get on eBay UK and get a timing belt locking KIT for a z16ler (VXR)
Not only do you need to lock the cam gears but you should remove the valve cover and lock the cams also to ensure they don't move.
The kits also come with the pin to lock open the belt tensioner and acc belt tensioner
The marks on the VVT system are just for reference ONLY, NOT timing marks. If you loose time you have to go the whole back back to the cam itself.
And gates is the OEM belt BTW.
