I have a few tips, personal rules of the road that may surpise and or unintentionally offend some people. Being an impatient passenger I like to give tips to folks that don't put any thought into driving.
Trying to find a spot in a crowded parking lot? Never follow people thru the lot while your looking for a spot and always check right up front first. You would be suprised. For some reason, in my experience, even very slow, tame drivers like this one. Ya can't teach them to speed up when they merge but when it comes to scoring parking spots.... You would be suprised.
Trying to get some quick lunch? NEVER follow a minivan thru the drive-thru. If they aren't chock full of kids it's usually full of people that all make special orders. If you go inside, pick a line where the people in it are looking at the menu. These people will probably know what they want when they get to the counter and will probably even have their money ready to pay.
Stuck behind a slow moving car in the fast lane? If I'm driving, there have been times when passing slower moving traffic via the freeway onramp comes in handy. I don't encourage this maneuver. It's not for a tame driver, but I might suggest it if I'm riding with somebody I trust and know is also impatient. Sometimes since the other cars obviously aren't paying attention, it just looks to them like you're merging. This is where and when I really love my tuned turbo LTZ.
Sometimes at a crowded semi-rural intersection when the left turn lane is backed up, I drive past the intersection and do a u-turn then turn right, or actually turn right, then turn around and go straight and I get thru much faster than if I had waited several cycles of the left turn green to get thru.
Right on red after stop isn't always just for the right lane. Sometimes there are two lanes turning right or the lane in the center can turn left or right. Outside lanes can often be used to turn right on red. Rare is the occasion you can turn left on red, but in most states, if you can only turn left onto a oneway, left on red after stop is legal. I think U-turns are legal in most states, but not all.
If that sounds like a rant, I got ran off the road and over a ramped concrete divider today by a cellphone wielding soccer mom. I went airborne. It was like a real sonic commercial. Popped a tire, broke a wheel. Lot's of my road rant has to do with minivans and people who don't think about what they are doing, especially when they're driving. ergo the windy ranty post on how to get around. Besides that, I drove for a living for quite some time and driving habits fascinate me. I could go on, especially about the driving psychology behind long trips with intermittent packs of cars and semi-trucks and other things I'll leave open for discussion because this post is already too damn long.
Edit Add: Gotta love those soccer moms. I could never do what they do, but the chaos I've seen in some situations has been alarming.
