Hey I got a question . The Air bag are tied into the cars system . What happened when you disconect the seats does it set off alarm , do you need to reprogram the car ?
Disconnecting the airbags turns on the airbag light, but that can be turned off. Now, I am not recommending disconnecting Airbags. We are disconnecting them because it is dangerous to have airbags in a car with a rollcage and harnesses. However, a car with a rollcage, race seats, 8pt harnesses, a fire system, electrical cutoff, etc... is a lot safer than a stock car with 3 pt seat belts and airbags.
Disconnecting the airbags and seat belts doesn't affect how the car runs, but will turn on warning lights. It doesn't usually set off the seat belt alarm, it didn't in the Camaro, so I'd assume GM uses the same basic programming system in all cars. Worst case, you just wire the car to think the seat belts are fastened all of the time.
I personally feel that OnStar is one of the most evil entities known to man (especially after it almost killed me in a Camaro at Daytona), and spells the end of personal freedom as we know it, so ripping it out of race cars is probably the most joy I get during the builds. BUT, it's also the most annoying system to remove from the car. It is wired into everything, satellite radio won't work without it, it sets off the check engine light, etc. BTW, a lot of people think that just pulling the OnStar fuse will disable OnStar... it will not! In fact the sonic has an even crazier system than the Camaro and OnStar has it's own battery and is functioning even when the entire car's electrical system is disabled!
Actually, the biggest annoying electrical thing was the rear tailgate since it has no manual latch... and after disabling the automatic door locks and central locking system... it's incredibly annoying to just be able to open the tailgate. I think we're going to end up just rigging a manual latch release.
