ZZP intake insert with budget tune.

I've already got my budget tune running with the zzp intake installed.
I read on an older post that the insert can be taken out after the tune has been installed.

I just wanted to confirm that I can take it out. It is riveted in place with one rivet, but Im not sure if there is any glue keeping it in there also. It seems to be pretty stuck in there pretty solid.

On the post I saw talked about having ECP enabled in the tune. I didn't specify that when I purchased the tune and the intake from BNR at the same time.

If I remove the insert will it upset MAF readings or simply allow more airflow?

These are the only mods I've done to my 1.4 to date..

Any ideas??

I haven't heard of it being riveted in, so yeah, you can remove it but you'll have to make sure the hole in the intake is sealed.

Try sending BNR an email, or make a ticket on their site asking if you have it.

Another way you could check is by monitoring the Long Term Fuel Trims while cruising, if they aren't near zero, + or - a little (~5) then I wouldn't the car with the insert removed.

I am running with the ZZP intake w/o insert w/ Trifecta budget tune for the RS.

No cels and no problems.

Disturbed by your statement that there's a rivet holding it in though. Are you sure you're removing the right thing? My insert does not have a rivet or anything resembling a rivet, it's one solid piece.

It's on my desk, of course, so I didn't have to run out to check.

This intake and tune was purchased from BNR only a few weeks ago.

Yes Sir, I kid you not. There was one small rivet securing it in place. I removed the rivet using a drill to sheer off the head. She came out eventually after blessing it with some colorful language.

I went for a drive to test her out and she gave me a P0171 code,(running lean?). I cleared it with the Ultraguage. I will now monitor for fuel trims as suggested above.

The insert was the blue plastic type and the rivet is only half an inch or less from the lip of the tube. I requested the tube in wrinkle finish. It doesn't have a ZZP logo on it. It looks good with out it in my opinion.

One side note... After installing this intake as per the paper instructions it came with. It mounts to the engine mount. The leg of the intake protrudes out too far. It was only a few MM's away from part of the engine mount. When the motor had load on it, the leg of the intake rubbed against part of the engine mount which then created a disturbing noise when turning the vehicle. I took to the leg of the intake with an angle and bench grinder to give it some extra clearance. The rubbing noise has disappeared.

After clearing the CEL and checking clamps and tubing for possible **** ups, I took it to the freeway. Long term trim seemed pretty stable at ~34, short term trim bounced around the teens.

I took it back home and re-inserted the insert, cleared the CEL again then back to the freeway. Long term trim cruising bounced around the 20s, under load it came down to 5 or less. Short term under load was around 0 and cruising around 5.

No CEL P0171 after re-inserting.

I have the exact same scenario. Rivet held it in place, had to drill it out, tune threw a P0171 with sleeve removed even though I specified intake when asking for the tune.

Apparently the budget tune with ZZP intake is configured to have the insert in it. Removal of the insert requires a FULL TUNE.

I don't know how other people are running the same budget tune with the insert removed and not popping a CEL. Perhaps different year models ?

Mine is a 2013.

I have 2013, I have the budget tune, and I have to have the insert in or I throw a code automatically.

Thank you for posting this. Got my ZZP Intake yesterday and installed it only to hear a very unnerving noise when I turn to the left. Checked it out today at lunch at work and I see that the leg of the intake is definitely rubbing against part of the engine. I'll grind it and hopefully this fixes my issue!!

Of course I am still getting a cel with my budget tune, but I'm tryin' to fix one thing at a time here.

Hmmm... Well I will try reflashing the tune and see what I get as far as the cel light goes. It's odd that my RS is rubbing. I know that it is because I can see the scoring on the engine from the brace. Unless it's not aligned properly somehow? (though with the brace, alignment seems idiot proof)

Those with a CEL, did you either-
A. Ordered the tune and removed the insert later..... Or only specified a ZZP intake when ordering the tune (not ZZP w/ insert removed)?

Or
B. Order the tune with "ZZP with insert removed" listed for mods?

I had the tune first. The ZZP intake was an after thought because I picked it up off the classifieds section on the forum and couldn't get the insert with it.

I took the intake off and replaced the SAB and all my problems are fixed right now. I think I am gonna fork over the money for the full tune. While I am waiting on that I will modify the brace so it doesn't rub.

For me it was (A). I ordered my budget tune and zzp intake at the same time and assumed it would be optimized for running with or without the insert.

After emailing Trifecta they told me a Full Tune must be ordered if you want to run it without the insert.

I guess for anyone out there considering a budget tune needs to specify that they want to run it without the insert or not.

Bondy you confirmed what I was thinking.

A short while ago I'd thought I'd seen someone posting that ECP (which the budget tune runs) cannot adapt for the ZZP intake with the Insert removed. Many of us initially assumed it would work since ECP was unveiled for BOVs and also the ability to make adjustments automatically for intakes, eliminating the need for tune adjustments and adding flexibility.

Unfortunately this wasn't entirely true. Apparently it still won't work with an intake that severely alters the MAF tables, ie. the ZZP intake in "race mode".... To be honest this isn't suprising in retrospect since the MAF is so critical, ALOT of work is done to scale the airflow tables for accurate reading when the MAF sensor is placed in a larger (or smaller) pipe. Without a correct reading from the MAF all sorts of crucial calculations are skewed and that can equal drivability issues.. It stands to reason that without the revised MAF tables for the ZZP w/o insert that the tune can't adjust enough for proper operation. TriVince wrote an excellent article about MAF calibration on hit WOT-tuning site for those that are interested.


High Long Term Fuel Trims are indicative of a lean condition, if all else checks out after adding an intake then the last culprit is that the pipe diameter at the MAF is larger than factory. Once the LTFTs go to high it throws a lean code.


Put in the insert in and all the issues should subside.
