Odor problem?

Hi all:

I'm an editor at Edmunds.com. We purchased 2012 LTZ 1.4T 6M for our long-term test fleet, and it has very strong "fishy" interior smell. It's not from leftover fast food, old clothes, wet dog, etc. We're pretty sure it's something in the interior materials. Now we're trying to find out whether it's an issue that's isolated or widespread. We did read a review (at Left Lane), mentioning "Heavy chemical smell from the vinyl seat covers," so we know we're not the only one.

A visit to the dealer did not resolve the problem. Nor have such things as baking soda or a shot of Ozium.

Is anyone else having off-gassing/odor issues in your cars? Thanks in advance for helping us better understand what's going on.

The "new car smell" in my Sonic seemed to have a little more chemical harshness to it than other cars, but nothing offensive.

Every know and then I get a strong odor, not a fishy smell but definitely not new car smell. Maybe as stated before strong chemicals. But as I said not all the time.

No strong odor in my car, just the new car smell for a few months. I put 4200 miles on it in the first 10 days driving to FL and back. If it smelled funny, I would have known.

No problems here, but my car has cloth seats not vinyl.

just the other night i noticed this so called fishy smell. it only happened after i picked up a "pay for play, midnight lady".

I've had a few smells early on, but usually it was when I flipped the AC to recirculate cabin air. If my understanding is correct, that is when the cabin air filter is used and I figured it was the reason. If not, then I must stink just like industrial cleaner.


On a side note/smell- Just had it repaired/partially repainted and the car interior smells terribly like paint. Even with the windows down I get a headache. I'm ready for that to end.

No odors here. Unfortunately, the new car smell is long gone too.

Try a little Febreze in the cabin filter.

My car is about a month old and I too noticed that it does not have a typical "new car smell". I wouldn't call it "fishy" but rather a chemical type of odor. I took a good wiff of the fabric on the seat back and determined that it was the fabric that was giving off the odor. I suspect the odor will eventually disappear like all "new" car odors do.

The only thing that it ever smelled like to me was plastic, and that was very briefly. I have the cloth interior and also bought an off the floor vehicle at the dealer.
