Disable seat belt alarm?

I believe, in Ontario, the driver is responsible for all passengers, regardless of age.

Even if they weren't, I wouldn't want to open my eyes to a red windshield after a collision, simply because my passenger didn't want to wear his/her seat belt. Especially considering if the person is my passenger, I know who that is. I wouldn't want to no longer know that person.

I stand with the make-your-own-decisions group. I wear my seatbelt 90% of the time, that being said for those that choose not to for whatever the reason (logical or otherwise) a little blinking light and an annoying as hell chime is probably unlikely to make them put it on. </rant>

As to the OP's original question one method of eliminating the stupid chime is to replace the stock headunit with an aftermarket one using a Metra kit. (Got mine from Crutchfield with a $100 discount) The kit includes a little speaker you are supposed to plug in to the main unit and tuck into the dash. I simply threw it in my box of spare parts. This will also kill the turn signal click you hear. A little weird at first, but I got used to it. It may also affect onstar functionality; I pulled the fuse on the 4th day so I have no idea.

I was moving my car an extremely short distance this weekend and of course did not put my seat belt on.. Naturally the dinger/chime went off and it reminded me of this thread.

It also reminded me of a friends Ford Fucus. If you did not put on a seat belt it would immediately and almost incessantly make an alarm type noise, something akin to a catastrophic "sh!ts about to blow up" siren.

Since this memory passed thru my mind I am thankful that atleast we have an alarm that isn't obnoxiously loud and almost constant but also doesn't make noises that sound like the car is about to explode.

We used the car as home base while out at Knoebels over the weekend. When it got too hot we hid inside for a bit and cranked the A/C... The belt alarms went off while sitting completely still in the parking lot.

WTF Chevy? At least wait for a signal from the speed sensor before you start nagging the occupants.

Its not Chevy its the insurance companies pushing for the laws and the alarms.
As for it going off before you left the driveway it doesn't matter the passenger should be wearing it before the car even moves.

As for sitting still and it going off...............I've got nothing.


You should always wear the safty belt anyway, its stupid not to. But I agree, there is no reason for an alarm or a blinking light other than insurance companies don't wanna pay to patch your dumba** backup after you get thrown into the windshield\airbag.

Amen! I'm a smoker and in the mornings or on break at work I'll smoke a cigarette, eat, and/or jam out in my car. I'll be sitting still and have to put up with that god forsaken chime! Its blood curdling.

I am pretty sure I posted this on this thread before but these may help with your issue if you want the belt to stop chiming at you. Just plug it into the buckle and it makes the car think the belt is on and wont chime anymore.
