Fit owner looking at 2015 LTZ - Android Auto?

Hey guys,

I found what seems to be a pretty solid deal on a low-mileage LTZ hatch. Test drove it and was really impressed coming from the Honda - much nicer on the highway and the engine is as nice as everyone says it is. I'm just wondering if it's true or not that the 2015 Sonic head units will be receiving an update to support CarPlay and Android Auto? My dealership and a few online sources say they will but I can find no mention of anything on the Chevrolet web site. Indeed, if anything it looks like the 2016 Spark will receive an update while the 2016 Sonic is passed over. If any of you folks have a direct line & could confirm one way or the other I would really appreciate it.

A few days ago I asked the same question to the guys at my dealership and they said that they did not have any information about the Sonic getting an updated for the head unit. They also says that Mylink is an independent company from Chevrolet and that if an update was in the works for the Sonic, that Mylink would post that information online.

That's too bad. The Sonic ticks every box for me but if I'm going to be buying a new(ish) car this year I'd really like it to have Android Auto support. Maybe I should hold out for the new Cruze hatch this fall.

More or less, I suppose. I know it probably seems a little strange for me to be so hung up over what's ultimately a pretty minor feature - but I can't help but feel like if I'm going to be buying such a new car it would be wise to choose one that's going to be relatively future-proof going forward. Getting nav on the infotainment display without forking out for a paid service would be a huge plus also.

To be honest, I wouldn't worry about it. For instance...back when I bought a new car, I came from a 2007 Cobalt LS which is as bare bones as you can get...no power options, no cruise, no nothing.

I was interested in the Sonic first and foremost (a hatch in general). Looked at Fit's (my mom has an 08 and I like them), Mazda2's, and a few other cars. I narrowed it down to the Sonic if I was going to get a small hatch. When I got to the dealer the 2nd time around, I looked at the car and only had 3 complaints. The armrest, the MyLink not supporting CD, and cargo space not being very usable for road trips with more than 2 people.

While at the dealer they got to talking to me about the Cruze (and I was already a fan of the Cruze but prefer a hatch and figured the Sonic would be cheaper).

Well GM in Dec 13 decided to put a $4000 rebate on new Cruze, but nothing on the Sonic. That was my deciding factor...all because of three things that now when I look back, I actually wish I'd bought the Sonic instead. The rebate made my 1LT Cruze with Driver Convenience and Tech Packages $17,700 roughly. I planned on a Sonic LTZ or possibly RS at the time, but decided saving money would be better. In hindsight, I would've gladly bought either the LT Sonic for the same money or actually spent the extra on either of the two models up.

The CD isn't a problem because about a year after buying the Cruze I stopped using CD's anyway...now I have XM and stream Spotify so all of my music is available anyway. The armrest still would've bothered me, but I would've survived. The cargo space...well as of a year ago I no longer take as many road trips as I used to and the extra trunk space in the Cruze isn't necessary...plus I don't have a side job where I need to use my car anymore and haul a bunch of stuff...

I REALLY wouldn't let something small like a feature on the MyLink dissuade you from buying a Sonic if you really want one.

Either get the great deal on the 15 or wait for a 16 and pay more. It's that simple.

BTW, can't beat the cargo hauling ability of the Fit when those seats fold up or down. lol

I respect your priorities, but to me the attributes of a vehicle as a 'driving' experience would be paramount. Then again I'm not attached to using various mobile features on my phone like many other people do. Through my phone on MyLink I only use the hands-free calling and the BringGo nav app. Granted the BringGo app is not ultimately free but its only a $50-60 one-time cost, and it works quite well for the most part; and with it being on my phone, I can take it anywhere.

Is the mylink or unit for 2016 that different than 2015 hardware wise?

If just software ..not being able to update the 2015 makes it sound like Chevrolet will let the mylink system become obsolete as soon as you drive it off the lot. They cannot offer or compete in todays market by not updating software.. They cannot sell cars with software and not maintain them.


Word will get out and todays current buyers will not consider Chevrolet for "minor" things such as this. They may not consider a new Chevy if their old one was not up-datable.

If its just a hardware rev the seller would do well to update the mylink to make the sale..that or bash it in with hammer and replace it under warranty.

While this is just one post, I can tell you that the demand for getting Android Auto and getting updates in general is a high priority for almost every owner of the Sonic LTZs. I have a 2015 LTZ hatch that I've only had for two months and I already feel like Chevy has totally forgotten about my model; especially after announcing that most of their 2016 line is getting Android Auto and it's literally only one year newer than mine.

Try Android Auto first, then decide if you "need" it. IMO it's not a great add on.

Screen mirroring, yes. Android Auto, not so much. Even Samsung driving mode is better.

From the research I have done there is nothing different about the My link from 15 to 16 model year(I also have a 2015 LTZ).

What i can't understand is how GM did this recent recall for the door chimes which involve updating the radio software and didn't think how customers would have LOVED getting a free upgrade that supports android auto in that process.

What don't you get? the 2016 sonic came out WITHOUT android auto, and GM updated those cars to have it. Since they wasted everyone's time with this ridiculous recall for the door chime it only makes sense to give everyone that same update the 2016 cars got.

There would be no extra cost to GM to make this happen, they already have to pay the dealers to upgrade the radio software anyway for the recall. The hardware is EXACTLY the same, its just radio firmware they already made.

I'm not sure I understand the statement. Did GM comment somewhere here and I missed it?

Seems pretty straight forward when you recall all these cars to give the most current software update. More than likely being a huge corporation one hand isn't talking to the other and common sense things like this get overlooked. Seems more like an over site when they broke the Bringo app with their recall which would not matter as much if they would have gave everyone Andriod Auto.

Android Auto and Apple Carplay will be standard on all car brands within a couple years, so if GM's rational is I'll buy a new car to get those features, nothing says my new car needs to be a chevy. Want to keep people loyal? Show them you actually care about their user experience and keep your current customers happy.

What I'm asking from from GM is not unprecedented, Ford has updated users radios to correct issues and add features more than once, even sent out USB sticks so the end user could do it themselves.

Completely different headunit guys...that's the issue here. The Android Auto/Apple CarPlay compatible headunits are the 8" MyLink and 7" ones in the fullsize trucks, not the 7" stripped down version we have.

I dont see any 2016 Sonic's getting Android Auto per this Chevy site: Android Auto Update

I'd love to have it on my 2013, but I dont see it happening unfortunately. The only reason I've stuck with the MyLink thus far is there are no integration modules out there that let you keep the vehicle settings (door lock/unlock settings, rear wiper, etc).
