Hole in muffler

i crawled under my car last night and noticed a small hole near the front on the muffler on the bottom side, i could see where its been leaking , is there some kind of drainage hole on the muffler, or is it a flaw and i need to go to the dealer with it. :sadbanana:

I agree with mitdr774... It is likely a drain hole. If I think about it at lunch, I will look at mine.

i will see if i can get a picture at lunch, there is still snow on the ground, so i will see what i can get with out crawling in the snow. :blankface:

I cut mine off before 5k miles, there is no hole. Well there shouldn't be a hole from the factory that is.

Called the dealership they said there is a small drain hole in the muffler, to drain the condensate to prevent the muffler from rusting out.

Yup! Its really not leaking because it is sealed.... It leaks because its suppost too.

that's what i thought, unless the internals of the muffler are not stainless, and only the outside shell is ?

Certain types of stainless do rust by nature. I forget why now but I don't think it necessarily indicates cheap.

I believe it has to do with carbon level, which adds strength. The drawback is rust.

What general said, I think it's 300 series stainless that rusts and is also slightly magnetic, or maybe 400 series. I'm about 75% positive its 300 series that rust haha.

Cost, malleability, strength, carbon conent, weldability and machineablilty all change with the content.


As for the hole, it is a drainage hole as others have stated, no worries about it.

I've noticed on just about all the cars I've owned so far that still had the factory exhaust in place a small drainage hole existed on all of them. Completely normal as others have stated.
