Alright, I got started on the DD8 auto dimming mirror and I'm doing the dome light swap (
like here) at the same time. I have a sunroof so it is a little more slow going, plus I just like taking my time and doing things like these as factory looking as possible.
First thing, in these two DIY threads there are a couple different terminals mentioned for adding the missing sockets in the connectors. Covering my bases I ordered both kinds and it's a good thing because the connector for the auto dimming mirror takes one kind and the dome light connector takes a slightly larger one.
These are the smaller terminals which are used by the auto dimming rear view mirror connector, unfortunately this pack of five pre-terminated leads with crimp connectors is about $40.00, yikes!
This pack of crimp on connectors are slightly larger than the ones above and are used in the map light connector, twenty five of them cost about $4.00 shipped. GM, pay attention here.
Here are the two kinds side by side
The reverse light connection
here worked perfect. After getting the mirror fully wired I tested it and upon shifting into reverse the auto-dim canceled as expected.
Working around the sunroof opening is a pain in the rump but slow and steady wins the race, take your time and be patient and you'll be fine. Routing the wires above the headliner and following the factory wire runs was a little challenging, every linear inch of the wire harnesses above the headliner were glued to the headliner as you can see in the picture. I did find a couple gaps in the glue where I could zip-tie the additional wires and in a couple areas I hot glued them along the factory wire runs. Yes, I was able to squeeze my hand, a plugged-in hot glue gun and my other hand to hold the wires in place while the glue cooled all within a few inches of clearance between the roof panel and head liner.
I was curious that the auto dimming mirror had more pins in the connector than the standard mirror (obviously) but even after adding the switched 12 volt lead and reverse light lead there were still two additional pins not utilized. I wonder what they're for.
