New Member Forum Repost '15 LTZ Experiences
Bought a 2015 Sonic LTZ 6m 2 weeks ago.
Put a set of General Altimax rt43 on it.
Rode quieter smoother than the original Hankooks with 43 k on them.
Hey, this little car handles!
Started reading Cruze/Sonic forums and became very interested in "tuning" the car.
Hey, more power for a few hundred bucks!
No more getting a sore back and greasy hands replacing carbs, changing cams, or milling the head.
Now the modern way is with clean hands and 30 minutes with a laptop!
I think I LIKE that.
Spent days reading about tunes. Lots of choices.
Checked YouTube.
Plenty of performance videos.
Decided to get "scientific".
I don't happen to have ready access to a dragstrip or a chassis dyno.
But I do have a stopwatch and several timing Apps on my Android phone (Torque Pro, and others).
Found a level stretch of lightly travelled road near my house and starting getting a baseline.
Timed in both directions.
Full lift on 1-2 shift.
Hit 60 at 6200rpm in 2nd.
Numerous runs in mostly 80 degree weather.
Average: 9.3 seconds.
Not bad for 3000lbs and a 1.4 liter engine.
My personal benchmarks were beloved cars I owned in my distant past.
A Morgan Supersports (Triumph TR4 engine that was souped up with cam, Weber carbs, etc.) and a 1970 Jaguar XK E. Both these cars would clock 0-60 in the low 7's.
After reading reviews from stock Sonics I believed that at least a one second improvement in 0-60 would be possible with no decrease in driveability or fuel mileage.
What's not to like?
Bought the Trifecta Advantage Tune.
$315./including cable to install.
Install was straightforward.
Immediately took the Sonic out to see what my "new" car would be like.
Hadn't gone far when I noticed a BIG hesitation off idle, then power came on like gangbusters.
0-60 time 9.5!
Car wouldn't idle, numerous codes thrown.
WTF!
Long story short.
Emailed Trifecta.
They responded that a lean condition existed.
Apparently, coincidentally to installing the tune, my pcv valve failed.
Took the car to Chevrolet.
PCV failure confirmed.
Dealer replaced valve cover and intake manifold (which means new throttle body and fuel rail too).
All under warranty, one day, no charge.
Back to the asphalt dyno.
Low eights right away.
Several runs at 7.7-7.9.
Car pulls way harder everywhere.
Smooth.
I got more than I expected.
I'm happy.
Love this Sonic!
