NEW SONIC OWNER- help understanding avg MPG?

i just bought my first financed car yesterday and yes… 2012 sonic LT!
Its used, has 41k miles, etc.

after reading reviews and looking online for the average mpg, I'm realizing that my cars avg mpg is nowhere near anyone else's….

atleast, on my dash it says AVG MPG 30.5

now, i don't know if that number is calculated or if i have to reset it since maybe the previous owner was a different driver than i am.. but I drive all highway, and i keep the car pretty steady. I'm just wondering why my mpg is so low

also i don't know much about cars in general but id like to get a better understanding on this please

The avg mpg sucks on any car really. Imo go by pen and paper

At least this way you'll know what you're actually getting vs the person prior to you since you don't know when the last time the previous person reset it since it's just stuck at 30

+1....You can reset it by pressing and holding the button on the end of the turn signal. Keep in mind the higher the MPH the lower the MPG. You will do much better at 65 then at 75 MPH.

The avg mpg reading is off on the Sonic's (and most GM vehicles), it's better to fill up, run the tank down, fill up again and divide the mileage by the gallons used. That will give you the most accurate indication of mileage for your car.

It also let's you know when you've hard braked or Hard Accelerated and if you've gone over the posted Speed limit for your state to see if your wasting Gas that way also. The average fuel economy reading is calculated by the vehicle's computer, by comparing the distance driven by the fuel used. The fuel used is determined by a fuel flow sensor within the fuel system. For an accurate reading; the display must be reset at every fueling. The display is seldom perfectly accurate, but does give you a general idea of fuel consumption. As previously stated; the most accurate method to determine fuel usage is to divide miles driven by fuel consumed.

Also there are a million variables to make your mileage go up and down.
Speed, altitude, alignment, tires, tire pressure, type of road, engine repair, way to many to list all.
