Well, here it is:

meh. Headlights and taillights look a lot worse in my opinion. Not like I would be in the market for a new car anytime in the next 6 years, but I don't think this would have bubbled up to the top of my list like my current Sonic did. The great looking and unique headlights were what originally got me interested. This looks kind of ... generic.

I read it as the RS would be a separate model only on the hatchback but the hatchback would also have the other trims and the sedan would have an RS upgrade as an option.

I like that the new headlamps are projectors but I too prefer the current headlight presentation. But the Camaro I ordered has arrived at Rodgers so in two weeks I will be back in a Camaro and no longer in a Sonic.

The press statement is not very clear. It says:

"The 2017 Sonic goes on sale this fall, offered in LS, LT and Premier trims on sedan models. The hatchback returns exclusively in RS guise, offered in LT and Premier trims."

Sounds like they are dropping the LS spec hatch, and merging the LTZ with the RS maybe?

In that case, maybe the current LT becomes the new RS LT, but at a slightly higher price than the current LT, but lower than a current RS?

And maybe the current LTZ and current RS merge to become the RS Premier (but again at the higher RS price point)?

Whatever. Not buying another one of these. Mostly because by the time I am in the market for a new car (years from now) I will be looking at a Bolt or something else (I like hatchbacks, but I can't justify the RS prices for a car like the Sonic). But if any Chevy reps are lurking here, I just want to put in my $.02 that I kind of hate both the new lights and the decision to deemphasize the hatch.

2018 is when the new design is scheduled to come out.

Cool! 2.0T with 6sp manual? That would be my setup. If I had the $$ I'd have the Sonic for daily driver and Camaro for weekend fun. Please post pix (yes i know this is technically a Sonic forum but still)!

I figured this will be considered the next generation sonic. It wouldn't make sense to release this considerable update followed by another the following year. If i had to guess 2018 model year will be when the updated powertrains are released.

I could be wrong. The lines of the car are nearly identical. On thing is for sure tho. When you compare this new "RS Hatch" to the current RS the new one looks like a sissy. The old headlights are one of the best parts of the car. Those wheels are especially ugly too.

Well it seems they are sub-trimming the RS in to two trims. RS LT and RS Premier, this way you can get the RS hatch in a more affordable version with the LT sub trim. Unless of course you wanted a hatch with wind up windows, if so, sorry. That is gone-o

This clears up a lot of the confusion for me. I was incorrect about this being the "next generation" sonic. Just an update. I'm personally flabbergasted that chevy is forcing everyone who wants a hatchback to deal with the RS's stiff suspension and short gears. Obviously not ideal for everyone...

Just read that the major redesign has been pushed back to 2019.

I'm not too concerned about the sport suspension on the hatch. In the linked article, it doesn't say anything about the gear ratios for 2017. I guess I'd prefer something closer to the regular gearing in the 1.4L T.

Not too many assembled as after starting to make the 2.0s Chevy placed constraints )I thinl about a hundred one week then about 50 for each of the next two weeks then none for at least one week) but it looks like the constraint has been lifted.

These numbers are national not regional. It seems the engine is in high demand and the Camaro is last in line to get any.

Yeah it is. It's an awesome car to drive. 275hp does a lot for that car. I'd buy one.

I'm not feeling this at all. The most distinctive exterior touch to the car, the exposed headlights, is gone. It just looks so generic, and has lost the aggressive appearance. The rear taillights don't look cohesive either, and appear forced just for the sake of looking different from the current Sonic. One of the qualities that made the Sonic stand apart was its quirky style, and that's no longer the case

The other tragedy is that the digital speedometer is gone, according the press release. It has been replaced a traditional analog cluster. Major bummer. The motorcycle inspired gauges are so different and cool, plus it's easy to read and ergonomic.

I'll probably still like the new Sonic, but it doesn't have that styling "edge" to it that I like about mine. I'm happy to have my '15

Lastly, why are there fewer hatch trims and an emphasis on the sedan? Seems like a mistake
