Resonator Vs Muffler

I'm a little confused....I'm hearing that the best setup on the 1.4T is a 2nd cat delete w/straight pipe and resonator. I also heard that magnaflow made a good 2.25 resonator, but all I can find are mufflers. Are high flow mufflers and resonators the same thing, or am I specifically looking for a product called a "resonator"? I'm looking to piece together my system and don't want to buy a full catback system at full price, but I'm having a hard time locating just the resonator from DDM or anybody else.

Resonators are even more specifically designed for for specific applications than the rest of an exhaust. Their function is to bounce unwanted exhaust sounds against other unwanted exhaust sounds thereby cancelling these unwanted sounds out.

Randomly picking a resonator I think would be true gambling: you might get what you want but are more likely to not.

Solo Performance in Canada near Toronto is well known for their quality exhaust products and may make a resonator for you.

My assessment, based on your having to ask: if you do not mind a portion of the snap, crackle and pop of a do it yourself exhaust go for it. If you are interested in enhancing performance be sure to go to a shop that does mandrel bending. You won't save any money unless you have an in with the shop staff but you will b able to say it was designed by you.

Turbo charged engines do not necessarily need a muffler as the exhaust that powers it muffles much. I personally believe they need a resonator but that just me and I know there are some who disagree.

I didn't put a resonator on my exhaust, which doesn't have a second cat, but I expect to need one when I put the Catless downpipe on.

I did mean you. Sorry about misspelling your first name. Thanks for sharing your experience. It sounds like your sonic is pretty sweet.

If you are going to run a resonator, I would have to agree with Laborsmith, go with something that is designed for your application. I decided to come up with my own exhaust on my old supercharged Cavalier. In the end I probably spent close to $1000 trying different pipe diameters, 3 different resonators and 3 different mufflers, not to mention the amount of time staying late at work.
