Shift knob

Most shift knobs simply unscrew. Have you tried that to see if the Sonic is the same way? And I know this is kind of a weird thread to find a home for, but this forum is not the place for it. It's about the shift knob, so I'm going to throw it in the transmission forum.

i tried that yesterday, it won't unscrew -_- i wanna put my own shift knob on Dx

The Camaro shift knob did not unscrew, and when removed needed an adaptor to accept many third party shift knobs. The Camaro forums have threads regarding this. Since the 2012 Sonic shares the same steering wheel as the 2012 Camaro, I suspect the procedure for the knob will be much the same.

Seeing how I have an automatic, I am posting based on heresay...
But don't many new cars, as well as the Sonic, have a "retainer" under the knob, that you have to pull up to put the car in reverse so that you dont accidentally shift into reverse at speed?
My buddy's 2006 Pontiac G6 GTP, 6 speed manual has this, and as far as the information he has found says, he can't change his knob because of it.

Yes, the Sonic does. As does the Camaro, if a remember right. That could be the reason an adapter is needed.
I think the Cobalt SS also used a similar method. Current Cobalt SS members should chime in if I am wrong.

looks like it :/ and the pull up ring does not matter, the cruze has the same set up as the sonic and when i drove it on the lot (i work at a dealership) it unscrewed when i turned it left. why don't our sonics!!!

I recall I had a similar issue with my Aveos. Yes guys, plural. Laugh away.
