I just use a 16 Gig USB drive loaded with thousands of MPG music files and hit shuffle. It's cool how the information is displayed on the radio and remembers where it left off each time (even in the middle of a song).

Works great, but when I tried it the 1st time I put everything into folders. It didn't seem to like it so I just copied everything to the drive without folders. You have lots of music (90GB). I know Newegg.com has 32GB drives for about $20. You could fit a good chunk of music on a 32GB drive. I'm not sure what the size limitation is.

You know what the nice thing about a thumbdrive is I wouldn't have to remove it in extreme temperatures, I could just leave it in there and forget about it.
I'm curious though if no folders, how can you organize the music? I mean, even 10GB of mp3s will be kind of hard to navigate in one list.

I popped in a 16g PNY stick from wal-Mart, usb3 or whatever the latest is. My Music is organized in directories, albeit only 1 level deep. They're mostly named in the "Artist - Album" convention. I have yet to have an issue, although it's been rarely used. I plan on testing out a 1tb 2.5" toshiba usb hard drive sometime soon. I imagine it will work fine as well.
The main issue people may have issues with is in regards to directory structure depth. I have yet to test how many levels the sonic will allow, but many I've encountered will only go down one directory level.

my 4 month old, brand new android device is UNSUPPORTED...sucks.
maybe someone can work on a hack to fix this.

Beware, most USB hard drives need more power than a single USB slot provides.
You'll likely need an external power supply.

Not sure how that's possible... do you not have the USB connectivity set to USB storage device"?
(When you plug in USB there should be several modes, charge only and several others will not allow you access to your media.)

True. The usb port in the car supplies no more than 1A. I've tried charging my tablet from it already; it requires 2A to charge and play. The 2.5" drive, iirc, uses between 500 and 750ma. I'll have to check to be sure when I get home from work. A hard drive, if it works properly, will be an outstanding solution, with SSD's being the ultimate. Thumb drives are a wee bit slow with seek times from what I've noticed.

That is correct,a *standard USB port will supply 500mA.
The thing is, devices aren't ports so they can take significantly more.
I first found that out with my wife's BlackBerry, it took 800mA.
iPhone's (and many other phones) use 1A chargers (SOME charge in regular ports) and most tablets take 2A.
A USB hard drive usually needs more power than 1 port offers so alot come with a dual USB dongle, 1 port for just power and the other port for supplemental power and data.
My Patriot memory stick is really fast back and forth, you just have to get a good one.
(USB sucks anyway and is a waste of fast hardware.(Duh, except USB3 wah lol))

i'll have to look into that. i know it does that, but i didnt change it when i plugged it in. i guess i should read my owner's manual hahaha...

USB power delivery is an active area of development. The original USB standard (released in 1995) limits the max current drawn by a USB device to 500 mA. Modifications to the standard include the battery charging specification (released in 2009) which allows a device to sometimes to be able to draw more current. Types of USB 2.0 ports include: downstream port (500 mA max), dedicated charging port (1.5A max), and downstream charging port (900 mA max at High Speed, 1.5 A max at Low and Full Speeds). The manufacturer (General Motors in this case) can decide whether or not to support the battery charging protocol on a port. Unfortunately, there's no way to tell by looking at it whether a port supports higher current or not. The manufacturer has to tell you in their specifications and the owners manual does not say anything about it. I suspect that the port in the Sonic is just a plain USB 2.0 port that supports 500 mA max.

The usb3 hard drive failed to negotiate for enough power. I do have an older usb2.x drive I may try out sometime. The only problem with the older drive is it is attached to my Wii, formatted wbfs, and is filled up with games. wbfs is really slow to work with and would take days to backup and restore. :sadbanana:
