Default 6 Speed trans whine and replacement MASTER thread

**EDIT: I have merged two threads that both had the same theme: A "whine" in the 6 speed transmission that was NOT present when the cars were purchased, that ultimately leads to a complete replacement of the transmission. My own 2012 1.4 6MT is now at the dealership for a transmission replacement. My dealer knew nothing about the failures that are beginning to occur. If you drive a 6MT equipped car, the noise sounds like a metallic whine or grinding noise.**

Now back to the existing thread:

I started noticing a whining noise in the transmission in 5th and 6th gear on my 2012 1.4 Manual tranny Sonic Hatchback. I took it into the dealer and drove with the tech to show him. They kept it and looked into it. They called me the next morning and said they were going to replace it and had one on order. It is at least covered under warranty, but pretty early for a tranny to go out. So if you notice a whining in 5th and 6th gear when you give it gas, take it into the dealer.

That sucks , but t the same time sounds like they are making things right for you . The 6 speed manual is starting to have a bad rep .

Manuals are getting a bad rep across the car make universe. Between bad clutches, flywheels which grenade the trans, and gears you would figure something might be done. I would say this started just over six years ago.

I don't see a solution as transmissions are geared for mpg.

I had mine replaced before 10k. It popped out of second so fast it almost went into first every time.

Thinking out loud, I wonder if the gigantic dual mass flywheels and programmed RPM flair have anything to do with some of the premature destruction.

Some background: To make modern manuals easier/smoother to drive for the unwashed masses, the OEMs have done some things to make it so the RPMs don't drop very quickly between shifts. The first is a big ass flywheel that likes to keep spinning. The second is actually in the ECM programming. The engineering slang is throttle flair. When you let off the gas during a shift the DBW doesn't necessarily close the throttle right away and the revs hang for a second.

Both are annoying to a person that drives like you're supposed to. In my car I occasionally get a lurch forward because of the FW and flair when I'm just driving normal. In my old VW with its stock 11 lb flywheel, this never happens.

Is this why my 1.8 is slow to return to idle after a rev?
I'm assuming so, would a light weight flywheel and tune solve that issue ?
