For synthetic oil, hard to beat the price on the 5qt jug of Mobil 1. Runs around $28 at the local Wal-Mart which works out to $5.60/quart. I've used Mobil 1 in all my vehicles for the past 10 years and have no issues. I really like how the oil flows quickly at start up, no 'clatter'.
Can you even get close to that price per quart with Amsoil or Royal Purple?

after my courtesy oil change from the dealer needs to be changed i will be switching to the signature series amsoil. the only down side is that with a turbo or supercharged engine you dump it at 15k instead of 25k. i paid to be a dealer for it to cut my costs on buying it. you can always PM me for more info or if you have questions i can call techline and get answers. i just hope that they start making teh EA oil filters for our cars soon.

Royal Purple has lovers and haters. Not totally sure why on both sides. It is good, but lover or hate?
Some brands of Mobil should be avoided. I dislike their ESP line. On diesels the turbo becomes very loud. Chatter like crazy in the cold. I also avoid the M1, with the same price you can get the M1 Truck/SUV. It has more additives that make more sense for turbo charged high revving engines like ours.
Then you have the M1 Extended, which is really good. Possibly the best of the line. Like said before, if you find it at Wal-Mart buy it. You won't find it cheaper. Unless there is a sale somewhere. But most of the time, it ends up being the same price.
As for 20k OCIs, if I am changing the filter... Might as well do the oil. Tried it a few times and it was too much hassle.
Well, I don't see it on their site anymore. Looks like I will have to switch to high mileage or extended for the Caddie. They only show turbo Diesel for SUVs/trucks.

This is also good to go for GM
I agree, but I don't think I was clear. It looks like truck and SUV M1 is no longer. Looks like they got wise to people finding out about the overlap or rebadging of similar products..
Basically, use whatever oil you want as long as it meets the specs set by GM so you don't void your warranty.
During my 15 yr vw bug stage I learned something about syn oil. There is a theory that some chemists and engineers agree with...and others disagree with. Does syn oil transfer enough heat to work in an air/oil cooled engine? Syn oil is supposed to "ignore" heat. Didn't I see the 1.4T has an oil cooler built in? Will pure syn oil "move" enough heat or is that why GM recommends the semi-syn?
Is it con oil to help cool things and syn to maintain oil life?
Many air cooled motorcycles and ATVs run pure synthetic. I've never heard anyting about synthetic "ignoring heat" It transfers it as any other liquid. It simply does not burn at near as low of a temperature as conventional oil. In fact because of this I beleive it is better for an air cooled engine than conventional, it handles higher temperatures better.
You know, kind of like peanut oil vs lard for deep frying. Its like saying peanut oil ignores heat some how.![]()
