Did you clean out the shavings inside and put any extra teflon on all the connections and RTV on the gaskets? I read some reviews that suggested those. Also what hose did you use? Type/Size?


I have the same style in purple going to add 2 aluminum plates down the middle with some teflon spacers and random holes drilled in them offset.

Well, I did use Teflon tape around the fittings and I did make sure that there were no metal shavings in the can before installing it but I didn't use any RTV sealant on the can. Maybe I should go back and add that. Because the can that I got from ZZP is not baffled, I simply added three stainless steel scrub elements. I'm not sure if that's the best approach to adding a type of filter but I hope it works. For the house, I first use a 5/8 transmission hose but after using it for a couple of days, it collapsed. So I went all out a bought a nice 5/8 wire mesh reinforced vacuum house.

So I have been running a catch can with a breather for a few months now, and I have drained pretty close to a 1/2 cup since install. I blocked off the TB vacuum port and ran a breather on the other side of the catch can. No issue to report, just removed oil blow by and a cleaner intake tract.

Here's a pic of the house that I ended up using for my oil catch can.

So what size is our stock PCV hose, (before I cut it) is it 3/8" or 1/2"?
Looks like the connection on the manifold is 5/8" or larger maybe, but the hose itself is smaller. I have 1/2" aluminum pipe I wanted to use to plumb my system. Then use short rubber connections where needed.

You're right. The barb fittings that are on the oil catch can were too small to fit the 5/8" hose on them so what I did was what you mentioned, I cut two small pieces, about an inch long each, off a smaller hose and put them on the fittings so that I could put the 5/8" hose over them. Before doing that, I did search all over for bigger fittings to put on the can but did not find any. So that's why I ended up installing one hose over another, but I'll be honest with you, I'm not too comfortable with the idea of forcing the air flow from a 5/8 vacuum hose to a 9mm barb fitting. I think that kind of restriction might create a problem in the future. What I did to get rid of my fear of maybe having an issue with my vacuum lines clogging up at the fittings or blowing off was to simply order another oil catch can with bigger fittings.

This was tough but it came out.
I decided to make the holes 1/2" NPT thread and use some 5/8" hose ends. The ID of the 5/8" nipples is close to 3/8"

I think so too, that the hose is too small and could lead to the Burst Disk bursting on the valve cover maybe from the restriction. I was reading a Chevy Cruze forum that someone had issues from a Catch Can install but not sure which catch can they used.

Now that is scary because I haven't received my new can yet but I have been driving my Sonic kinda hard with this restricted can that I have installed. Instead of buying a new can, I should have done what you did, I should have drilled bigger holes on the can I have so that I could install bigger fittings.

Change of plans. I think this is much simpler for me. A copper sheet with holes and one large one to run a rubber tube through.

I don't trust the scour pads for oil separation as they can flake and send metal into the turbo or engine.

I replaced the oil catch can that I had initially installed with this one...

The can has been working great.
After I had been using it for about a month (about 2,000 miles) I checked it and found about 4 ounces of this reddish liquid.

I was happy to see that the can is working but I was also a bit concerned because I thought that was a lot of liquid to find in the catch can after just about a month of use. But maybe that's normal?

Keep in mind it won't all be oil

Also llia why not keep the scour pads or just throw in scotch brite or something as a filler for them? Seems like you're going to loose effectiveness without baffling

6' of Pro-Flo 350 Nylon Braided Hose -10AN
(2) Red/Black Straight Max Flow Hose End -10AN
(2) Black Straight Flare Fitting 3/8" NPT to -10AN flare

Removed the heat shrunk corrugated hose from the oem plastic fitting. The -10AN hose was a tight fit on the fittings but all the inside dia matched up nice for a clean install.

I might change out to -12AN hose, fittings and retap the occ for 1/2 NPT to -12AN fitting.

I couldn't figure out how to mount my oil catch can by the firewall, so I ended up installing mine by the battery.

Well, that's the issue I had. I didn't want to drill in to the firewall or into any of the panels. Maybe I could have built a bracket and mounted it on to an existing bolt, but at the time I found the setup I ended up going with the easiest.

I've been kinda thinking of mounting mine when I do it near the washer fluid res or battery
