I just bought a 2016 Sonic from Hertz sales and have 2 questions after scanning throughout the 100+ pages of the thread.

1. My steering wheel phone & radio controls don't work and the temp is missing from the radio. They screwed up a patch, did't they? The dealership should be able to fix it, right?

2. I have seen that the 2016/17 Cruze radio is compatible with the 2016 Sonic. Has anyone tried it? The reason I ask is that I've seen them for less than $200 on ebay and Android Auto may be worth it.

Every head unit is VIN number assigned with that said you will have to reprogram the head unit to your VIN

If I had that done would the service techs still be able to update it and would it keep Android Auto?

stupid question time

the screen on my 2013 LTZ got *ahem* cracked to the point where touch controls don't work, so i've been looking into replacing the myLink with another OEM part. however, i've also been thinking about perhaps going the aftermarket route on this instead, but i'm not sure if it's a good idea, considering the car controls that are performed through the myLink unit. the advantage for me in getting an aftermarket unit is that i can possibly gain better functionality with my phone, or access to different/better/more desirable user interface. an advantage with keeping with the myLink is that it's replacing a stock part, which ought to have little to no problems working.

essentially, what i'm asking is this: do i absolutely have to replace the myLink with another myLink? if so, do i need to keep it the same "generation" as the one that's in there (as in, get a replacement unit from a 2013/2014)? if not, does anyone have any recommendations on aftermarket head units to use? i'm not looking to put in anything like a sub or amp or stuff like that.

To my knowledge no one has attempted the swap. The bcm is supported in the head unit, which means vin programming, which means dealership, GM tool, or *******.

The Russians were the first to crack the Cruze and Sonic head unit but I found the mods caused glitches in the backup system that were never debugged so I went back to stock... no video in motion, but that's all I would have really gained, still no screen mirroring.

Why do you want to swap? Android auto?

Update on my situation, GM fixed this by updating the radio software. Apparently my sonic wasn’t on the list of cars that needed the update. The only way you know if you need the update is if the control stop working, and the ambient temperature reading stops. That would be fine except I had to pay $95 for them to tell me this, needless to say I called GM customer service to complain, still waiting to hear back

Did you get this squared away? If not, shoot me a message and I'll help you out. I just fixed this issue this morning. I have a modified file that you need to copy over to the radio and all will be right again.

Yes GM fixed it, and charged me 95 diagnostics fee to find the problem and then update the radio.
