1.8 engine difference

Well, yesterday was not a good day for me, I ran my Sonic into a flooded street, and sucked a bunch of water up into the intake. I was able to get it running again, but I think it blew a hole in one of the pistons, as it is missing, smoking and there is some water starting to show in the oil.

My question is if anyone knows, other than the oil pan is there any difference between the 1.8 for the manual and the auto transmission? My car is a stick, all the ones in the bone yard are automatics. If its just a matter of changing the oil pan, thats easy, but wasnt sure if there was any other differences.

Sorry to hear. I live in the same area and drove through some deep water but no issues. Did you by any chance modify your intake system and removed the baffle in the wheel well? Some call it the anaconda air duct. I have th 1.4 turbo manual.

I didnt modify the intake, but I did hit something a few months ago and had screwed up the front end a little, the front bumper cover was broken along with the bottom grill. Maybe that screwed up the intake? I was wondering because i could not imagine they made it so that the intake was that low to the ground, didnt make much sense.

I don't there is any difference between the two. Obviously flywheel vs torque converter. But they designed the engine to take either transmission from the factory. Just from a cost savings perspective it also makes sense.

Well, after starting to get all kinds of electrical gremlins popping up, I decided to make an insurance claim, and like I figured, they totaled it out, so my sonic is on its way to the bone yard....
