Hey gang, just wanted to get your opinion (especially those who are tire guys and gals!).
I currently have a set of 215/50R-17 on my 2012 LTZ Hatchback and I really like the ride (I went up from the 205/50 size). However, where I live we have potholes and crowned streets that makes the air dam up front scrape the ground when entering or exiting driveways or side streets.
We also have a lot of dirt roads that are not well maintained which makes it challenging for low profile vehicles. I don't want to remove the air dam and would like to put a little additional height on my Sonic if possible without having to raise the suspension.
I'm thinking about going from 215/50R-17 to 215/55R-17 but I'm wondering if there would be enough clearance under my front struts. So far by measuring the increase diameter of the larger tire, it looks like I would have enough room. But I don't know about when the wheels are fully turned from left to right if they'll rub against the sides.
My question is does anyone have any information on a tire that size? The vehicle is 100% stock. And I realize I would have a speedometer error showing I would be going 1 to 2 mph slower than my actual speed but I can deal with that.
I don't race my car and the tires would be more of an All Seasonal "Touring Class" with a "V" speed rating for sidewall stiffness.
The tire's diameter on the 215/55R is 26.3. I'm curious if anyone has ever put that on a stock 17 inch rim without any problems? If so, I'd feel more confident than not knowing and having to try and experiment by putting new tires on only to find they rub when your turn lock-to-lock and then having to remove them if they do. The additional rubber height on the wheel would make me feel better if I hit a submerged pothole in the rain.
Thanks!
