3rd brake light flasher mod

Hey all, so I put my self on a very limited budget for the sonic because of buying a new house. To keep my self sane, Im allowing my self to get one small inexpensive part a month. So I decided to get my 3rd brake light flasher module.

I had done quite a bit of research to determine which one I wanted to get, as there are ALOT of them out there. I ended up getting the
" Car Truck Scooter BRAKE LIGHT FLASHER BLINKER 36 Modes !!"
off of ebay... ebay ID= 281096309375

It was only $20 shipped and actually got here much 2 days before it was supposed to which was fantastic.

So on with the install pics.

step 1: Remove the tape that goes around the 3rd brake light power wires
step 2: Test each wire to determine polarity (mine had BLACK as (-) and BROWN as (+))
Step 3: Once you have determined the (+) in your car, cut the wire right about in the middle (leaving enough wire on each side to strip, solder, and heatshrink/ tape up.
Step 4: Strip back and solder the Red wire on the flasher module to the switch side of the brown wire
Step 5: Strip the Black back on the module and on the cars ground and solder.


Step 6:Strip back the Yellow wire on the module, then Solder and heat shrink to the brown wire on the bulb side.

Step 7: Neatly tape the newly attached wires together, leaving out the 2 white wires.

Step 8: Place something heavy on the brake pedal so the 3rd brake light is on. Then Short the 2 white wires together until you get to the desired flash setting. (There are 36 different modes on this so there are a bunch to choose from.

I dont have a video of them in action yet, because I couldn't press the pedal and record haha. Hopefully ill be able to take one when I get off work tonight with the help of a coworker. But in the mean time here is a video link to youtube of this module on a 3000 GT

Actually its not, because it is not a strobe module. It has a momentary flash for about 1 second and then on constant. It is actually leagal. This is also confirmed by a local county cop as well as a state trooper.

I believe Toyota had 'pulsating' center high stop lights on some of their cars. It's actually safer, it alerts the driver behind you since there is a rapid contrast change before the light stays on.

Also, what cop is seriously going to pull you over because your center brake light blinks when you stop. Well, I guess if you were in Cali... Maybe.

im also a CJ student haha about to finally graduate with my bachelors. yea i know that in SOME* states it may be illegal, but that also generally makes reference to the Strobe modules, not the pulsing ones... and with this particular module, there are many modes from slower to faster flashes.

If I have something sitting on top of the "shelf" say a grocery bag. You can see the 3rd reflecting off the bag. Also I've driven behind my gf driving my sonic.

I'm a CJ student and I've talked to many cops about different lights in and around cars.

This is called "Appeal to Authority", and is a logical fallacy.

In some states that the lights are allowed they are actually only allowed on motorcycles and the like. Frankly if you are that afraid driving you probably should stay home.

I've seen Mustangs do the same thing. I think its a good idea. Sometimes its hard to tell if people are braking depending on where the sun is and a flashing light really does get your attention if your behind it. Not to mention when peoples high mount lights go out they never fix them - and to me thats the light I pay most attention to. Half the idiots around here are driving around with tinted tail lights so you can barely tell they're braking in the first place.

There are a lot of things people like to do to their cars that are a bit dubious when it comes to federal motor vehicle regulations. But it's OK because they make the car faster or look cool and stuff...

However someone who wants their CHMSL to pulse a time or two initially for safety purposes, by golly they're breaking the law! :banana:

I actually wish they would mandate this technology as anything to help draw people's attention away from their stupid phones would be very nice to have. As drivers of tiny cars in a country full of heavy trucks and SUV's being piloted by inattentive drivers, the laws of physics are not on our side. We need all the help we can get.

I understand the strobe effect possibly being illegal, but can't see why otherwise would be. I'd rather have my brake light blink (like commercial trucks and bikes do, for a good reason) to fiend off distracted drivers and butt-munch tailgaters. I may visit this post again later to do the mod. I've been wanting to change the car horn to something more Japanese so people can hear me in noisy situations like on the freeway; while it sounds cool, the stock horn is too low toned to be noticed, and I have to honk like a shmuck just to be noticed. (No exhaust mods, can't rev at them either )
