Additional 12v Power Outlet

I often want to have 2 12v accessories plugged in(Phone and GPS) and having one outlet makes that impossible. Has anyone installed a 2nd power socket?
Yes, I know I could get a splitter but I don't want the extra height from the hard splitters and I don't want the extra cable clutter from a wired one.

I'm thinking about putting one in to the left of the stock one but will have to make sure that there is nothing underneath that will prevent me from doing so.

That's one place to put it, BUT I don't wanna have to go through all that mess to do that install.

It was really easy, all you need is the power port, some clips to tie into the stock power port and some wire.

Thanks for the reassurance. I'm gonna swing by the dealer after work and see if they have the stock receptacle and retainer. Might have them order it if they don't carry it.

you can pick up the new power port for a couple bucks at auto zone, the stock one has large plastic clips around it that would make it a tighter fit behind the dash

That's fine because I plan on putting it to the left of the stock outlet once I check out clearance :banana:

good luck with fitment, It's pretty tight under that console. if there is any other place it could fit easily would be in the cubby below the A/C controls and that would still be tight.

The stock one is recessed, so unless there is is a ton of crap under the left side of the same area of the console, it should fit better being flush.

For my custome phone holder i hid a second socket hidden under the dash that splices into the stock setup. Works perfect and i technically have two sockets. I like things clean and no wires showing is definetely my style

Why are you even considering adding a whole outlet to power your iPod/iPhone when a USB power port will do?

They're easy to install, compact, and you can put it practically anywhere.
(The giant 12V ports are hideous, silly, and you already have one for those devices.)

Glad MyLink has a USB port, I can charge my device off of it while it supplies music. (or not)

Here is how I added a 12v outlet. I mainly added it to power my radar detector that has a remote mute control that I need access to; otherwise I would have hardwired the detector. I also use it to power a Garmin GPS, so I don't have a cord draped across the console and shifter for power. It came from Walmart auto dept. and was intended to be plugged into an existing outlet, but I modified it by soldering the wiring directly to its terminals, and routing the other end to the fuse panel. It is mounted with double faced tape and also secured by a filler/plug made of black polystyrene foam mostly for aesthetics.
It is wired into the fuse panel using an add a circuit device, hooked to the existing power outlet circuit. It has two 12v receptacles and two usb charging ports. (one 12v not used is plugged: usb ports covered)
The detector is mounted on a riser that I made, and rests in the depression on top of the dash.

Thanks for the post, papasonic. I have the parts for my install. Just havent HD time to get it done. I may end up putting my power outlet in one of the cubbies if I can bring myself to tear the dash apart.

The way I installed this outlet didn't involve taking apart anthing except removing the cover for fuse panel access. I drilled a small hole in the back corner of the cubby with a longer drill bit; just large enough to pass the wire harness. I used a length of mechanics wire to fish the wire from there to the fuse panel. It was quite simple, and took very little effort to route the wire and install the add a circuit connector. I understand that this isn't the best way to accomplish a wiring installation, but it is safe due to the fact that the wire is fused at the source; and if ever there was a ground fault, the device would just cease to work.
If I ever needed to remove this device, it could be done in less than a minute, and only a tiny hole at the back of the cubby would be left as evidence.

I didn't want to add another outlet, but I wanted it on all the time, so I just added a fused jumper to the fuse box.

Seems like a lot of work to me. I just bought one of these and tucked the cable out of the way.... Now I have two 12v outlets and 2 USB outlets. $16 and you can take it out in seconds.
