any 2" hitches or higher tongue weight hitches come out?

Pretty much all the threads I've looked at were much older but I'd really like to find a hitch with at least a 400lb tongue weight so that I could throw an aluminum bike hauler and a dirtbike on the back (roughly 350lbs total) I know the car can handle it I've had much more loaded in the back than that before and of course it'll be putting the weight back further driving responsibly will keep this from being an issue.

Would it even be possible to modify a hitch to strengthen it or does the weakness result from how they are mounted?

I believe that you already have answered some concerns with your questions.
Granted, the Sonic could very well handle the weight that you mentioned; just not when applied to a hitch.
Because there is no substantial structural member to attach a hitch to; the available hitches are of limited capacity. The mounting points only fasten to uni-body sheet metal structure, and would be insufficient for the class of hitch mentioned. Further, the liability of producing, installing and using such a device would be prohibitive.

I built my own rack to mount on my 1.25" hitch. I think the most I loaded in it was about 100lbs.
As mentioned above,the car can easily pull the bike but just not by the points the hitch is mounted.

The limit of the hitch isn't the car, it's the way the hitch is built.

Buy one, take it to a welding shop, tell them what you want to do with it, pay them to make it stronger.... boom.

No hitch company is going to build anything stronger because idiots will start towing (heavy loads and trailers) with their Sonic and blame the hitch maker.
