Any ideas why these look so different?

These aren't the right types of nut and bolt to use Vaseline on. Marine grease would work better, as was suggested.

when I worked in the paging/mobile telephone industry (before cell phones LOL) we always used Vaseline to stop the corrosion build-up on the battery terminals

Some cars have a designed plastic cover for strut topends to keep this from happening..but GM opted to not do that. Its a near-bottom line sub compact, and every dollar counts I guess. Good thing I live in Texas where that sort of thing doesn't happen.

Since Vaseline is really just a very light petroleum grease, why not just do it once and fill the cup with a high quality lithium base grease for lubricating bearings. It will last the life of the car.

Why not silicone a rubber cap over it?
