Any way to disable Auto Window UP?

I don't mind the auto window down feature, but I experimented with the auto window up and it scares the crap out of me. My kids run around the car while we clean it, and LOVE to play with the windows.

I did an experiment and if you hit it sharp it will stop and reverse, but if you just rest your hand on it, it won't.

I used a stale Hotdog roll (still in bag) to act like a kids finger, and it only stopped about 1/2 the time when it got near the end.

I don't like those odds, so I'd rather be able to disable that feature if at all possible. Anyone know if it is possible?

Yanno, That's a brilliant Idea

BUT.... I need the music on to drown out the Kids voices as well as the voices in my Head.

I am thinking of patenting one of my inventions that seems to help. Edible Duct Tape. I use it when I can't find a baby sitter. It usually takes them 3 - 5 hours to chew their way out.

It comes in cherry and chocolate flavored. If I use that, it will probably help save fingers AND keep the inside of the car dry.

I need to make a diet friendly version though. I use it too much and the kids are getting fat.

OR - I can search for a way to disable it and make it safe....

I figured it was pretty obvious. I have a set of computer speakers in my garage that I plug my phone into while taking care of the car. This way you can still listen while washing it.

Check the kids are far away before I touch the switch...

But they'll be that one time I, or someone else, hits it and doesn't know enough to do it again fast to stop it in time....

I'd place money on the fact a lawsuit will come about because of this....

Wicked convenient, but I just don't think it's 100% safe, so I'd prefer to disable it. I don't want to take it away from those who like it, I just want a way to stop it in my car. My granddaughters fingers are just too cute

I wonder if it's built into the motor itself. A lot of times they are the same specs for each side. I bet you could look up the parts and see. Maybe you could get a driver side window motor and put it on the passenger side?

If the brains for it are in the motor, and it fits, you wouldn't have to do anything extra.... Maybe....

Hmmm.....

My mind was turning, cause I use to teach and design electronic junk, and I could build a simple relay to do the auto up on one push, stop on 2nd fairly easily. It's the sensing of the pressure to stop and reverse it that makes it safe and complicated.

So, something is monitoring the stress. I'd bet it's in the motor itself. Who knows. Maybe they do use the same motor, but that wire you mentioned to cut, already is disconnected for the passenger side. Makes more sense than building two separate motors I'd think....

I did a quick search, and don't know how accurate it is, but it looks like they are two different motors. I just wonder if you could put the driver one, with the EXPRESS UP/DOWN on the passenger side? Hmmmm

The switch is def different you can feel the difference between the auto up and the Reginald switch.

Motor may be diff but I know the switch is different the auto up/down has a two stage switch.

Here's a little info on the driver's side window switch.

It comes as one assembly; if one of the switches breaks you'll have to replace the whole unit, as mentioned by forum members in other threads:

Here is the underside of the window switch mechanism. The top left in this pic is the express up/down button, and the right side, with springs, is the child lock button.

The bottom portion/circuit of the window switch. The bottom left here is the express up/down. It has a plastic covering over the buttons on the circuit board which depress the switches for the auto express up/down in the circuit.

This photo is with the rubber cover removed and one of the manual up/down switches removed (SW1). You can see here the LED is soldered on the circuit board itself labelled 'LED1'. 3 of the switches are the traditional manual up/down fully open or closed circuits with copper contacts. Forgive my lack of circuitry/electrical engineering knowledge.

After taking it apart, I believe the ECM doesn't control the function of the window switch. Meaning hopefully the function of the express up/down can be terminated by cutting power to certain leads in the connector. And/also a new circuit could be added to the manual circuits to convert them to express up/down (the aftermarket has a few of these things floating around). After an email to ACDelco, it looks like the window motor for the auto express up/down is different internally than a traditional motor. As many of you know, window motors have a failsafe in max torque to where they will shut off automatically when a certain torque threshold is reached. Any insight into all of this is appreciated, trying a window switch tinkering project to have full auto/manual function with LED's on all switches on the driver side. Will update with more info on this in the future. If someone is working on this please share!

Wow, nice work so far. I think with a little time poking things with a multimeter, this is easily doable. I too dislike the auto-up, but for a different reason than the OP. I hate it all the time, not just because of my kid's safety.

Thanks! Yes I think you're right, shouldn't be too hard, just will take a little time. IIRC Eric mentioned in another thread that the LS has all full manual buttons. Will look for one of those at some point in the next stage of this mini project.

This got me wondering.

1. I see there are three motors numbers. I can see 1 being for Driver w/ auto up, Driver rear w/o auto up. And the two on the Passenger side probably the same. I wonder if the control is in the switch unit you took apart, or the motor itself. I would think that the Driver motor has the most significant difference in design because it has to give the torque feedback to a circuit to stop it from rising when that torque is too high. I just wondered if that feedback went all the way to that circuit in the switch, or was internal to the motor, seeing as it is different from all the rest.

2. I wonder what the Model Numbers for the motors are for the Holden Barina? Making me think;

a.Could the passenger side Motor of a Holden Barina be used to replace the driver side Motor of a Sonic, so it's just an easy swap to disable the auto up/ down?

b. Could the Sonic's Driver side motor be used in the rear driver side window, and two Barina Motors be used on the Passenger side windows to make the car fully Auto up/down?

3. Or, if it's all in the switch, or you NEED the switches, would it be easy enough to get the switches needed, either from a Sonic dealer, or a Holden Barina dealer, and mix then to work as needed for either scenario mentioned.....

Thanks for enlightening me, I didn't know the holden had this feature on more than one window, is it on all windows? Def worth a try if we can find part numbers to the holden, I'd be interested in trying a simple swap to see what happens. Buying the motor to the holden and the switch would be an easier fix to have this feature on all windows. And if that were the case, could probs find a way to disable this feature and choose between full manual and auto up/down.

I thiiink, to have the express up/down feature on the motor that is made for this purpose, requires a specific circuit to engage full power via the window switch for the duration of the motor's engagement. So just adding the motor I don't think would do the job.

Aftermarket has these things already that supply full power until the regular torque threshold of the 'normal' window motor is reached, then it cuts power to the switch. I bought one from autoloc to install on an older car I had and never used it, so going to try this out at some point soon:

The quality of these switch boxes are poor, and I doubt they can be used on cars which have a more complicated circuit switch or motor, like our express up/down drivers window. And this is one reason for the poor reviews on these types of things on amazon/ebay.
