Anyone else getting a grinding noise when braking?

It usually happens when I'm at a higher speed level like above 40MPH and come to a dead stop. It seems to be when I'm in the 10-20MPH range. It makes a sort of grinding metallicy sound. If I take my foot off the brake and reapply it, the noise goes away, but that probably isn't the best thing in an emergency stopping situation. I've got 1,500 miles on my Sonic and it's happened five, maybe six times since I've gotten it.

I know exactly what you talking about happened to me a few times. It's like the car slides but it's like a grinding.

Thanks for the replies. I don't know that it was sliding, but there was definitely a grind to it, not a squeak.

i seen a sonic drive past my house the other day and its brakes were grinding/screaming very loud.

i have no idea why and i couldn't make it out from under my truck quick enough to flag them down.

Doesn't sound normal. If you'd like please private message me the last 8 digits of your vehicle's VIN# and I can check to see if there are any special coverages related to the grinding you're hearing.

Vanessa I am having brake drum pulsing/squeaking but I am at 13.5k in miles and my dealer told me anything past 12 k is maintenance, is that correct? I have had the car 7 months

So I was doing 75MPH coming off the freeway yesterday. The grinding was the worst I've heard it so far, but I couldn't take my foot off the brake as I was going too fast. When I drove home it seemed fine. So I think I'll have to get it looked at. Can I take it to any Chevy dealer. I suppose in a perfect world I'd go to the one I bought it from, but they're an hour and a half away, but there's another Chevy dealer a few blocks from me. Thanks.

Just as an update, I did take it to the dealer, but they couldn't find anything wrong with it. I recognize it's intermittent so it's difficult to find, but I'm unsure what to do at this point. I didn't hear it for a while, but had it happen again yesterday.

Happens to my car also when im going over 40 also and i come to a slow stop it sounds like a grinding as if a disk is bent and something it coming in contact for a little then leaving contact not sure how to say it lol its like a VUM ....VUMMM...VUMMM sound its not too loud but i hear it not going to do anything about it cause it does not always happen...

I am also having this issue mostly from the Highway having to break from 65-70MPH to 50MPH.. I hear a bit of grinding and a humming sound as well.

I took it to the dealer and they said they werent able to find any issues, and that the pads should last at least 25K miles if not, more.

I have 8k miles on the car and driven mostly on highways.

i would take it to a different dealer to see if you could get better results from them.

That's a possibility. I'd hate to find out my rotors are shot right after my warranty expires.

Has this issue been with the front or rear brakes? I'm getting it with the rear. Just hit 4,000 miles.

I have the same issue. My one & only dealer on the island said it was tire noise.... They won't look at it again. I mention it every time I take it for service. Mine is really bad, but I have nowhere else to take it. If I get into an accident because of this issue the lawyers are going to have a field day.....

What Island do you live on? Just wait for your rubber to wear out and take it back when new rubber is installed and the issue still exists.

There was a recall on the early Sonics cause the brake pads were not installed . Google it .
