I curently have silver star ultra light bulbs they're ok but I dont think they live up to the hype.

Now those I could go for, but I've heard the same from others. The complaints about them blowing out a lot has always concerned me.
What about brightness and color temp?

They are pretty white but they're not that bright, I actually think the stock bulbs did a better job.

I have heard both good and bad things abojt those replacment bulbs. I work at advance auto parts part time and some guys say they are much better. But everyone says their life spand sucks. Thats mainly due to the blue file they have on the bulbs this only hurts theboutput and life of the bulb. What id do for replacment bukbs is the philips 65w bulbs I have used these and they do make a difference. They are nowhere near the output of the hid kit that I have but they are a good alternative for a brighter halogen bulb. As for an hid kit yeah it is brighter and makes a world of difference but, you do take a chance. In my area 98% of the time an office wont care about your headlights but there is always that chance if he is having a bad night so he pills you over to say they are too bright. But even then I have seen friends switch the hid kit back to the halgen bulbs go into court say they fixed the problem and got off without any trouble. I think because it such a minor offence that some officers dont see a point in taking the time to pull you over for something you can change out so easily and quickly.

I dont know if I would go as far to say "less of a man" but headlights do two things. They allow you to see at night as well as allow others to see you. If eveyone passing you gets blinded, you are a danger on the road. HID's are commonly stock on higher end vehicles, but you'd NEVER see an HID bulb w/ an open reflector like the sonic has, why? It's unsafe for others due to light scatter.
ChrisJ, We definately see eye to eye on this subject, but with the plethera of cheap HID kits on the market, we're just preaching to the choir.
Upgraded halogens like the silverstar ultras work great with this style headlight! They are designed to bounce off the reflector.
If cheap aftermarket add-on's is what you're into, I suggest adding those sweet fake vents and awesome chrome door trim.

I will now wonder, every time I am blinded by a driver apparently using HID lights w/o projectors, if they are also using "those sweet fake vents and awesome chrome trim."
At least I will get a small smile as I grapple with maintaining my place on the road while my eyes are adjusting.
A very small smile.
The hippy in me sympathizes with the desire to do one's own thing, but it also questions blatant disregard of another persons ability to do their own thing safely.
Please fellow members of SOF have a regard for the rest of us. If there was no choice I would not be posting, but there is a choice.
Do it right or do not do it.

So an HID kit equates to fake vents now? I love the do it right or don't do it at all sentiment, you obviously have no investment in other peoples cars so if they go into this project and jerry rig HID projectors to their head lights and screw up its no loss to you.

even with projectors, if your car is at a certain level as, say a mercedes suv, those lights are still blinding.. its not 'ricer' or un-manly to put HIDs on your car, people just need to stop being so soft, and just let everybody do what they want to their cars. Its just like putting a loud exhaust on.. of course people will complain about the noise... but who cares, its your car, not theirs.

I can't even argue with this logic. I don't see how you owning a car has anything to do with everyone else's right to not have to put up with noise pollution.

ok well thats like me saying someone with a loud exhaust can cause me to have an accident because i have seizures from loud noises
