Axle Strength

Snapping axles on FWD's was a theme on the last night I went to the drags. 3 cars broke an axle, including a Honda hatch that was running about .5 seconds faster than me. This is beginning to concern me as I live more than 100 miles from the track and a broken axle would be a nightmare.

I've heard that Honda's are not known for particularly strong axles, but what is the capacity of the axles on our Sonics and is their any approach to making them stronger?

Get a spare axle . Guy at work built a Honda that's running low 10 sec 1/4 miles. He snaps axles about every 3 months . I wouldn't be to worryed but I'd get spares just in case

you can swap an axle at the track pretty quickly and if you look lost enough most guys will help out.

id say go and find the cheapest spare you can to get you home

looking at GMPD it looks like a spare set could be had for about $200

This is the first FWD power project car I've worked on. Are CV axles typically ambidextrous, or do I need a spare for right and a spare for left?

the parts diagram show's two separate parts for it but i couldn't tell you for sure

It does say something about the left having an aluminum wheel though

Left and right axles are different. If you break the shaft, you have to buy a complete assembly (assuming you are buying OEM GM parts). If you just break a an inner or outer joint, they are available separately.

Who has two thumbs and released the axle P/Ns into the GM catalog while he was still at GM?

Sorry. Forgot to answer the original question. I never found any good data about the ultimate strength of the axles.

Something that will keep you from finding out however, will be eliminating axle hop. That shock loading is what will eventually kill them.

I went full stiff rolleyes on the rear Pedders at the track, and that seemed to help. Will stiffer rear springs, like the 6kg's you mentioned in another thread, also help with wheel hop?

Needs adjustment in the valving up front also, with lower profile tires not helping either. I've had decently quick Hondas last one made just over 300hp but made torque in the ballpark the sonics are making, same for me broke outer cages every 3 months or so. When they started to go I could tell either they clicked crazy going straight and turning or my car would pull like the alignment was off to the side that was bad. But I drove the piss out of that car everywhere. I'd say with a stock or mild clutch and not smashing the car everywhere I wouldn't worry about the axles yet. Backups are a must at some point
