Borrowing laptops

Did anyone else have to borrow a friends laptop to install and datalog their tune?
I have a macbook pro and I don't really need a new computer. I'm wondering just how inconvenient it will be if I have to track down a friend and set up a time to meet every time I want to do a datalog or if I have issues and need to re-flash to go in for warranty/recall work.
I got the DDMWorks intake with my tune from BNR. I'm not planning on doing any more power mods until autumn or winter so after the initial dialing-in I suppose I won't really need to datalog unless something goes wrong, right?

IIRC there is a how to on flashing and logging with a MAC. IMHO sell the mac and buy a real computer

I didn't borrow a laptop I borrowed the cable
After I was done flashing with Preloaders cable I got home and sold the laptop as I had planned to when I got it the week before.

It's pretty easy to do, I can't imagine a friend would mind. Make sure they have a good battery, it would suck to have the battery die before you finish. You would need a long extension for data logging if they have a bad battery.

Hmmm. It is a six year old macbook pro, so it also has a six year old battery that'll run for about 30 seconds if it's not plugged in. It's basically a...lesktop. Or a daptop. A new netbook style PC is like $300 running windows 7 so I'll just borrow for now and see if I really have a need for one. If I do I'll just buy a PC instead of Eibach springs, for now.

I bought a netbook for $149 and use it exclusively for flashing and datalogging. I use a flash drive to move tunes onto it and logs off, and that is the only virus conduit it has. Seemed like a worthwhile accessory.

If you are getting a budget tune an extension cord would work, but there is also the power inverter option, fo $20 or so you can get a device that plugs in 12volt socket and makes 110 volt power.

For a real tune you want to be able to go back and forth until dialed in which may take days; borrowing a laptop might be inconvenient. And then n ext spring when yhou do more mods...start over? Better to get your own, it doesn't have to be non crapulous.

I don't condone this, but an option is to buy a netbook from wal-mart and return it when you're done. A few months ago I was seeking out a new netbook, ultrabook, or laptop. It took 4 purchases before I settled on the laptop I kept. HH gregg and wal-mart have excellent return policies; I'm sure other places do as well.

That would be an option for the Budget Tune, but if you're flashing, data logging, waiting for email to come back with better tune, repeat... you're either keeping the netbook for a week or two before returning it, or you're returning it a lot of times. WalMart does keep tabs on who returns an item, and while they are very lenient about an individual return, they get pretty funny once they perceive a pattern of abuse of the privilege.

Ill probably just buy a $300 Acer and call it done. My current computer is totally unsupported at this point. Can't use the latest OS, versions of Firefox, etc. It's too bad...it still runs great, is relatively quick, and has never had any problems whatsoever.
