Then why claim to warranty it in the first place?

I think that during replacement of the glass if it could be determined that there was a structural defect in the glass mounting surface or other identifiable cause of failure, then the warranty should cover replacement. The owner, not knowing if this may have been the cause was trying this avenue first.

You bring up excellent points Papasonic. I understand the manufacturer's position in this case. But how would they be able to determine a defect when the window is already shattered? All the dealership did was call Safelite and replace the glass. They communicated nothing to me about even trying to find a defect. They just assumed something struck the glass and left it at that. It seems that the only way this would covered under warranty is if enough Sonics had the rear glass break and it became a recall issue.

As I said back at the beginning of the thread, I would have understood if someone or something had hit the glass. I would still be upset, but at least I'd know the cause. But my car was on camera and nothing came near it! So what am I left to think?

I'm assuming the video footage isn't high enough quality to show the moment when the window shattered? With no one near it and no visible impacts, that would seem to be pretty good proof.

you can see the culprit on the bottom of the glass. tempered glass is formed same way metal is quenched to retain hardness. safety glass is cooled very fast right out of the oven to add stress in the event of an accident the entire window is waiting for something to hit it and then you get the spider web effect. you can bust a window with little as 1lb force on the tip of a pen easier than a boxer can throw a punch through these windows. tell tale sign is usually a circular pattern around the immediate damaged area. FYI when this glass shatters...the cracks travel faster than the speed of sound.

Too late for the OP, but i really suggest comprehensive insurance coverage, which in addition to other items covers glass.

For me at Statefarm it's only $18 extra per 6 moths, or $3 a month. It's a no-brainer.

One small stone or even a pebble thrown from a vehicle passing by can shatter a window with little effort. It really does not take much to break this type of glass.
