Codes 0171, 1101, and 0507

Ok, here's the history. The Squirt is a '12 with a 6spd and has roughly 140k on the odo. New air filter and Autolite plugs within the last 10k. Pulled out of the Big M with my barf in a bag and stepped into it kind of heavy, but not matted. The check enigne light comes on as she stumbles a little bit. Pulled the codes and you see in the title what I got. She seems to have a rough idle every once in a while, but a little blip of the throttle and she usually clears her throat. Any suggestions as to how to diagnose the old girl?

P0171 is a bank lean code, P1101 is a MAF error code and P0507 is an Idle Air Control RPM high code.

Sounds like your car is having issues with air flow metering/detection. How old was the air filter before this? How dirty?

If I had to guess you have a bad MAF or IAC motor. MAF is probably pretty cheap, idk about IAC (didn't really know we utilized that system).

Pull the MAF and see if there's any visible damage to it

I'd clean the MAF as the first step before replacing it. Make sure to check the airbox and the tubing to make sure there are no cracks or holes in it. Is the car completely bone stock?

There's no separate IAC motor, it's just the throttle body. Lean along with a rough elevated idle sure sounds like a slight vacuum leak somewhere.

All I do is drive the little girl back and forth to work every week day (98% freeway). I changed the air filter at about 125k. It looked really clean. You'd have guessed the vehicle had less than 40k from the look of filter. Unfortunately, other than a tramp stamp, she's as stock as it gets. The wife googled the 1101 code and read that it was an air "quality" code and and the issue could be either a MAF sensor or a turbo. My plan is to stop and get some cleaner and see what happens. Thanks for the help and I'll keep you in the loop on what I find.

I'd go with Stew on this one. Check for vac leak or loose connection.

An P1101 is signaling that there is a general air measurement issue, but there are multiple problems so the system can't determine what is at fault. It's likely your MAF sensor or an air leak, which the P0171 suggests. Look your vacuum lines and intake pipe over for cracks. With that mileage it wouldn't be too surprising.

I had the same codes on my roller skate during my roadtrip to washington state. When I got there I checked out the car and found the valve cover pcv rupture disc was busted and sucking air. I replaced the valve cover for 74.00 and problem was solved. Now I have another problem with mine which has me floored U0073 code pending and my tach, speedo n cluster go crazy while driving no performance issues that I see. Will do it for awhile while driving and never get a check engine light. Clears itself at ignition cycle.

That part not being separately replaceable is just a dumb idea. Replacing an entire valve cover to fix that little rubber diaphragm that goes bad is more expensive than it needs to be, and not to mention how wasteful it is with the amount of plastic getting discarded.

If or when I have to replace that on mine I'm going to see if there's any way to service it.

I'm still trying to grasp how someone could 'just drive to work' and rack up 70K miles a year on a car... How far is that commute? 200 miles a day?

I commute 230 miles a day to n from work. Doesnt include any mileage put on running around while at work. I have 124000 right now. Would be close to 200000 if I hadnt gotten moved to another office for a year.

Disassemble Camshaft Cover?

I saved my valve cover and plan to disassemble it to see how its made.

simple2me, did you get a chance to disassemble the camshaft cover to see what the disk looks like? Please post some pics.

Mine just burst, dealer replaced it under warranty, but I agree with Stew, this should be a separate replaceable piece.

Better yet, since they 1.4T had been out for a couple years in the Cruze, it should have been redesigned to be more robust. Mine failed at 48K miles ?!? That sucks...
