DDMW Heat Shield Installed

Just installed DDMW's heat shield. But first I wrapped the exhaust manifold in hi-temp insulation. The entire job took about 30 minutes and I managed to do it all from the top, even with my man hands.

Started with this:

Then did this:

Then reinstalled the stock heat shroud, and installed this:

The hardest part of the install was waiting for the exhaust to cool down first.

I'll be monitoring intake temps, and will post the results.

That's the stuff. I don't know where an average consumer might buy it, or how much it costs, because I scored it from work. I have extra left over and have access to more if you want some.

The insulator that gave it to me says it rated for 700 degrees.

I spent a summer doing insulation in renovated homes, That fiber glass crap sucks as it is. I was positive I would need a hazmat suit for this stuff.

The bottom bolt is tricky. It takes mechanic dexterity to get the threads to start in the crazy awkward arm position required to get your hand in there. But tenacity always prevails in those situations.

What are your readings on a cherry hot 1.4t exhaust manifold? Are they higher than 700 F?

Update: intake temps seem to be same as ambient at freeway speeds, with occasional 2deg raise during uphill accel.

Also notable is the reduction in skyrocketing intake temps during heat soak after slowing from a hard pull. Intake temps only jump 15-20deg instead of 30-40.

And some bigger news, Vince from Trifecta is trying to modify my tune so my UG can actually read post Intercooler temps. This reading will really help determine whether the stock Intercooler and DDMW Diverter is performing to my performance needs.

I'm reallt interested to see if you can get post IC temps, that is something I'm sure a lot of us would love to have access to do.


Oh and I'll temp my manifold in a day or so. I've done it before but don't recall what it was.

Turbo-boosted exhaust manifolds can get as hot as 1600deg. I'm curious to see what you find. My main idea for insulating the manifold was to keep the gases leaving the cylinder head hotter for a bigger temp drop across the turbine to aid in spooling.

The post-IC temp readings will also give me an idea of how effective intake temps are by the time they get discharge to the throttle.

In other words does much hotter intake air translate to much hotter discharge temps? Or does the IC take care of the heat well enough to not worry so much about intake temps?
