And what is the fine for tampering with an emissions system? Something tells me its more than the entire Sonic is worth (used).
Also correct me if I'm wrong, but thats a federal issue is it not? My point, good luck throwing any books to recover your warranty.
In the US it is a Federal offense to remove any part of the emissions system!
If you are caught, as the vehicle's owner, you could face as much as $10,000 in fines.
AND anyone who does the work or helps (i.e. the mechanic, a friend, whoever) also faces up to $10,000 in fines.
Please be aware that there is ALSO a $10,000 reward for anyone who turns in someone who has removed or altered an emissions system - owner or mechanic.
Even if you live in an area where emissions testing is not required, you are not exempt from this regulation and you will still run the risk of being caught.

You may be breaking the law but who actually cares about this law except for states requiring inspection, I highly doubt if you get pulled over by a cop that he'll get down on his back to inspect the emissions especially since that would put him in a compromised position. The only way you would get caught IMO is if you take your car into the shop and they report you which is highly unlikely to as they work on dozens of cars a day and probably couldn't care any less whats on your car.

Police officers have been known to check for deleted cats and as $ub said, people will gladly report you for $10k. Also, in many areas here when you get pulled over 1 or 2 more cars will join the one for backup.
In my book, deleting a cat to gain a few hp at most isn't worth risking a $10K fine. When I modified the exhaust on my truck as I mentioned previously, I replaced the pellet style cat with a high flow honeycomb type. I didn't just remove it.

Do you have inspections in your state? If so then sure they might call for back up to check but in a state like mine, highly unlikely as people here drive all kinds of unsafe vehicles and hell I think they would be stopping every teeny bopper that had a honda civic to check their exhaust but I never see that happening.
Also where is the link that says that if you report people you get 10k?

I don't know if its actually true or not, but in refrigeration I know for a fact people can rat you out to the EPA for not properly recovering refrigerant so its probably the same with emissions systems on cars.

Neither, I just think its a non issue, sure it may be illegal but in states that don't do inspections I think people have nothing to worry about. Could someone rat you out, sure, could a cop check you sure. But if you don't have to go through inspections every year I think the chance that someone is getting pulled over to check their emissions is slim to none, In a state like CA? Hell yeah it could happen, I believe they do rolling emission checks all the time but they are tree hugging hippies out there

But in a place like TN where as long as it has 4 wheels and runs you're good to go lol I don't think people have to worry much.Also did you know that just because its federal law that it doesn't mean the state as to enforce it, it means the feds have to enforce the law, the state can if they so choose to but they don't have to. Such as the case with the assault weapons ban and several sheriffs coming out and saying they wouldn't enforce it. If it was to pass which it isn't the feds would have to enforce it. I doubt the FBI is going to be doing rolling emissions checks in places like TN. lol.

Not sure on how likely it is to happen, but shouldn't I at least provide our members\friends with the information that it *could* happen?

lol, Here's what I think on the whole emissions deal. If you are stupid enough to run a catless exhaust in a state like CA then you deserve to get caught because if you live in CA any amount of time you know what the emissions standards are and they are pretty high. Hell if I still lived in CA id even be worried about putting a high flow cat on it just because i'd be paranoid lol.
Also I just thought of this, if you are driving out of state in a place like PA or something and they drive by you and see you don't have an inspection sticker they might pull you over even if they notice you're out of state tags they might be douchey enough to try to get you on something. Luckily I don't travel out of state.

We all should care about the environment and the junk we are pumping into the air. Just sayin..... Pretty sure we haven't colonized another planet for us to all escape to when mother earth decides to give up the ghost.

Mother Earth won't "give up the ghost" we will just create an environment we won't be able to live in. Then Mother Earth will stabilize and some new form of life will take over. We do not have the power to kill a rock floating through space.
