Narrowly avoided this happening to my car tonight... OMG.



A friend left his 99 B16B swapped Si at my apartment while we went out of town, we ran into some bad weather while we were out and had to plant Kyrie under an overpass to avoid the same fate, saw Reed Timmer in the TIV, had a handful of storm chasing support vehicles honk at us... and pretty sure watched several tornadoes try to form. The energy in the atmosphere in my area was OBNOXOIUS today. I was nervous to pull into the alley and see what I knew we would see, and I got even sicker when I saw the actual result. I wish we would have taken his car, mine is replaceable... these are harder to find as clean as his

Yeah, it's a Buick Caprice basically with a olds 307 instead of a chevy 305.

The thing I like about those cars vs the g-bodies is the caprice and others have 6x9s in the rear deck and 4x6s in the front. G-bodies have 4x10 in the rear deck and I think 3.5" in the front.

When you have spots for 4x10 you're pretty much screwed. You either use adapters that suck or try to find decent 4x10s which really don't exist. At least with 6x9s you can bolt in some good 5 1/4" components if you want.

The car floats down the road, seems fairly solid given its age, and I kinda like it even though it is complete opposite of what I want in a vehicle. I think its the simplicity of it that I like.

I've owned a few and have worked on many mid to late 1980s cars.
There is nothing simple about them.

A jungle of vacuum lines, vacuum operated heater controls, a disaster of an emissions system.

Honestly in my eyes the Sonic is simpler though my 92 TBI pickup was very simple. But that wasn't a car and didn't need to meet the same emission standards for some retarded reason. It even had a pellet type cat, something they stopped using on cars in the 70s!

The vac lines could be an issue, and it looks like the AIR system was deleted at some point. Mechanical fuel pump, HEI ignition, carb, and minimal sensors and controls to deal with. I am sure that with some time the vac. lines could be cleaned up and some eliminated.

Saddly the 4.3L in my 96 K1500 makes more power.

That's not a normal carb.
It's a computer controlled quadrajet. I worked on mine a few times, swapped metering rods in the secondaries a few times as well without removing the carb. But setting up the initial settings is a nightmare and you need to drill out plugs to even get to the idle mixture screws.

Also, any time I tried to get an aftermarket EGR valve they were always wrong and even if you used the orifices they supply they never work right. First hint of a problem is the car stumbling as soon as you crack the throttle.

Keep in mind, this quadrajet will not work right without the ECM. It will run full rich causing terrible MPG, fowling plugs and just ****ty running in general. When they are working right, they are amazing. When they are messed with they suck.

The TPS is the plug in the front right, metering rod control is the blue and black plug on the left side. The primary metering rods are controlled much like fuel injectors via duty cycle.


One of these carbs is what gave me by far the snappiest throttle response I've ever had in a car. I was also able to bump the key and start the engine without even hear the starter turn. Never have I had anything like it from fuel injection but like I said, if anything isn't perfect, it blows.

Keep in mind most quadrajets including yours are capable of around 750CFM.

Yes, the olds 307 is a POS but don't insult the carb.

oh, you think my post was in jest? ask mitdr. every time you touch the throttle the whole car twists, and it's definitely not because the suspension is softer than a box of kittens and clouds.
