Time to install a sump pump? Or, more sump pumps, or a generator?
In the house I grew up in we had 3 pumps + a generator and never flooded even when all of our neighbors flooded during hurricane Floyd.

The basement is unfinished but some stuff still got damaged. Mostly my old furniture from my apartment days. I guess items that were more sentimental than anything. But good news is my hello kitty collection survived

My basement has stone walls and half the floor is dirt but I have a sump pump. I don't think it being unfinished has much to do with it. Actually, me and my dad dug the hole and put the pump in right before Sandy hit because it had flooded during Irene.
In fact a lot of friends make fun of my basement, I guess because its old and creepy.

On the other side of that stone wall is the old cistern from the 1860s. I put that arm there to scare my mom because she kept saying my basement was out of a horror movie.

Oh cmon it's not that bad.
Besides, I didn't even mention that sometimes you see a centipede crawl out of the wall, run across it and crawl back into another crack.
That actually really bothered me the first time I saw it, but after a while I guess I got used to it.

And wolf spiders. Do you remember my FB posting a while back about having to upgrade from a broom to a shovel to kill a spider on the basement stairs?
