You all definitely lived in the wrong apartment buildings. I used to in the past as well.
Ours didn't smell like fried food, but you did have to smell everyone else's food which I don't like.
The place I lived in had several different size apartments.
If I recall our 1 bedroom @ 1100sqft was the smallest, the largest being around 2500sqft and many had fireplaces and cathedral ceilings. All of them had finished wood flooring in every room except bathroom and kitchen, central air, washer, dryer, dishwasher, garbage disposal etc.
What they did all have is bottom of the line appliances, fixtures etc. At the time the rents if I recall were $1250,$1400,$1700 and $1900 a month depending on size. I'm sure the top two are over $2k a month now. So yay, paying a pretty good chunk of money for garbage appliances and to be right next to a bunch of people.
So while I'm sure there are better apartments out there, I doubt there are many.
The only dislike I have about the dishwasher I put in our house is sometimes I forget if I turned it on or not. I've even put dishes in it without scraping them just to see what would happen and the entire load still came out clean.
The one in the apartment needed to be run 2 or 3 times to get everything clean even after thoroughly rinsing the dishes and sounded like a dump truck. It was also replaced once, with a nice used black one (all other appliances were white).
