DIY Short Shifter

I removed the lockout mechanism in the shifter assembly, and the lockout is always down.

I see. Is that enough clearance to cut it and make it shorter?

So i had an idea. Im gonna run a very small led and mount it on the dash. When i go into reverse it will light up. That way if theres any accidental revrse hits i know it before moving. Nothing too bright just enough to see.

A quick explination is just run a small wire back to the taillights. Tap into the reverse wire. Then on the other end, attatch it to the positive of an led. Then ground the other side. Then just mount it. Done lol.

Ok so this morning I said screw it and bought a knob....Heres my morning...

Remove of the old knob wasnt too bad..A little twisting and pulling and it came right off.

I removed this piece from the lockout. Its on the bottom of the shift boot. There's 1 clip that holds it in. This disables the lockout.

From this point I went ahead and cut off about an inch of the metal shifter. Didnt want to go nuts...I will cut it more soon.

So I slid the boot back on and zip tied the rest of the lockout so it doesnt move but it still holds up the boot.

Now I just screwed in the new knob andddd done

Im gonna do the light within the next few days..ran out of time today..should only take a few minutes...

Perhaps you could find out where the reverse signal to the tail lights is coming from under the dash or in the console instead of running a wire all the way back

Yup. I just did that lol. Its at the bcm under the drivers dash. Its a green/white wire. Grey 26 pin plug, pin 3

Nice setup, might have to look more into this once you put the light in. Have been throwing around the idea of a short shifter myself, along with some colored accents in the interior and exterior to make it look not so stock lol. Thanks for the pics!!

yah i removed it completely. havent had a problem with it and it looks fantastic just waiting on ddms short throw

lol makes me think of " the $$$ shift " lol dude this is great!! I thought about it a couple times, cool too see how it turns out, I too am waiting on ddm but might do this in the mean time, looks awesome!! good sh*t!!opcorn:

I know ddm's short shifter is coming out but its not high on my list. Doing this on the other hand made shifting better, but taking that knob off was a pain in the ass. I said **** it and just sawed the whole knob off breaking it into pieces lol.
