At what point is it dangerous to not use a block heater? Below O°?

When the coolant and oil freezes! If you regularly see below freeing you might want to drop a block heater in.

Oil doesn't freeze at least not at any temperatures on earth I think.
Coolant shouldn't freeze until -40F or so.

IMO a block heater is required if you see temperatures in the -10 to -30F often. If your around 0F or above you're fine especially if running 0W30 oil.

I also don't know how well a block heater will keep antifreeze from freezing in a radiator if at all.

I've had slow cranks in Maine and wished I would have had a block heater. Yes it takes extreme temps to "Freeze" fluids but how well do they work when within 10-20 degrees of their freezing temps?! Probably not well at all and if you can install/afford a block heater it probably wont hurt a thing, hell, even keeping a block up to temp in 40 degree weather will help with cold starts.....

I wish I had a block heater. I remember living in eastern Utah, it used to get -40 degrees. The first time I started up my 1990 F 250 when it was cold like that and it took about 3 minutes before it got a oil pressure. I immediately purchased a block heater oil pan heater and used to keep a blanket over the motor at night.

Eh, my sonic and cruze saw 15F quite a bit over the weekend and seemed to start absolutely fine. Started the sonic this morning at 17F and it was fine so I see no reason to use a block heater at these temperatures.

Of course I do not engineer engines or oil so I can't really give a professional opinion on it.
