Engine Block

So my co-worker and I have been wondering(we both have sonics) what engine block is the sonic running? Is it a "barrowed" one from Toyota like a 2zz or is it an actual chevy block. We were wondering this because chevy has barrowed blocks for the prism and other vehicles, and could possibly make it easier to find parts for both performance and conventional!

I didn't know chevy did that.. I know chevy bought geo.. so that might be the whole pism thing but.. this is all I know man..

The 1.8 is version of the A18XER used in Europe. As far as I can tell only GM divisions and partners use these engines. Other than the Cruze I can only come up with the Saturn Astra as having used the basic engine in this country. I do believe it was a Gen 2 version where the Sonic and Cruze use a Gen 3.

GM has never borrowed just a block. It's always been complete engines and generally happened because of the joint ventures i.e. Corolla/Prizm, Swift/Metro/Sprint, Matrix/Vibe, etc.

Additionally, GEO was always part of GM. They killed the brand and rolled the models into Chevy's lineup in the early 90's.

To answer the original question, both the 1.8 and 1.4 are GM engines.

Yes, Saab Was not listening to GM and they sold it off to a guy who killed the line

As far as I know the Saab 1.8t is actually a 2 litre based on the same family as the LSJ,L61, ect

well **** we have the same ignition coil pack as a saab, and if you look under the plastic ignition cover there is opel, saab, and other stamps in the plastic lol

My original one just had a gm stamp and my new one still only has a gm stamp on top of the coil.

My Daughter has a 2000 Chevy Corolla, alias Prizm. The Corolla and the Prizm were built on the same assembly lines at the same time in Fremont, California.

Corolla, Prism, Matrix, and Vibe were all the same chassis.

Saab has used a version of the Family 1 engine before, but it was just a 1.6T. There is a lot of parts sharing between family 1 engines and since it was an engine family developed by Opel I am not shocked by the markings you found.
