Exhaust Tip fit questions

Hey folks,

I have a 1.8 hatchback (2LT). I was looking at exhaust tips after reading some of the previous threads here and I need some guidance as to which of these is the proper size to fit my tail pipe.

Any guidance or feedback would be most appreciated.

Either of these tips will work on the hatchback because of the large cutout in the rear valance/bumper. If you use the smaller tip, you would not use the supplied clamp inserts; just the bolts, or better yet use allen type setscrews for a cleaner looking install. You could even cut off the tip at the mounting slot/holes, and weld the tip on. The larger tip would more closely match the radius of the cutout in the valance, and would need the supplied fasteners to install. I would prefer the larger of the two, unless you would prefer that the OD of the tailpipe more closely matches the ID of the tip. Also, trimming off the turndown portion of the tailpipe would provide less restriction to exhaust flow with either tip.

Thanks for the detailed reply. I was going to ask if cutting the turndown was necessary for the tip to fit properly. I can see how it would restrict the exhaust.

Two related questions:

1.) Is cutting the turndown as simple as taking a hacksaw to it?
2.) Any idea if cutting the turndown voids any portion of the warranty?

The answer to # 2. not sure; the only component that would be affected for warranty purposes would be the muffler assembly itself, as it would be modified from a stock condition.

The turndown wouldn't need to be removed for the larger tip size, because the tip inlet is so much larger than the tailpipe; and there would be minimal restriction to exhaust flow. It would just create some turbulence within the tip itself prior to the exhaust exiting the tip.

In that case I might just try the larger tip and slip it over the turndown. Do you think the turbulence will have an adverse effect on the performance/mileage?

I don't believe you would ever notice a difference in performance or economy. But if you look into the end of the installed tip, you would see the turndown preventing a straight exit to the flow of exhaust. I installed a tip on my 1.4 turbo initially without cutting the turndown, but later removed the turndown by cutting it off.

Update

Received the exhaust tip today. I ordered the larger size 2.5X3X7. The installation couldn't have been simpler. With the clamps open, the tip slipped easily over the existing exhaust. Tighten the three clamps and that's it. The look is a huge improvement over the existing tailpipe.

The downturn on the existing exhaust tip is gentle enough (i.e. not 90 degrees) that the new, larger tip still affords plenty of room for the exhaust to vent. The new tip also has a weep hole for water to drain.

My only concern was that the threads on one of the clamps seemed to be slightly stripped as I backed it out. I was able to thread it back in and get it to grip when I installed it, but I'm not entirely sure just how much force the clamps need to stay secure. I don't want to overtighten and damage the threads further or crimp the tailpipe, but I also want to make sure it stays put and doesn't vibrate loose over time.

Not necessarily. The cutout in the sedan valance for the exhaust outlet is much smaller in radius than on the hatchback. I put a simple stainless steel turndown tip on our 1.8 sedan that just fit over the tailpipe. Anything much larger than the existing tailpipe diameter would rub/melt the exhaust cutout on the sedan.
