Front Plate without a Bracket
Got pulled over by a highway patrolman the other day because my 2012 Sonic LTZ hatchback didn't have a front plate. I know its a heinous crime that puts all of society in terrible danger but what can I say? The officer just gave me a warning but it was annoying and IMHO a waste of both his and my time. I'm just guessing but statistically speaking there were probably greater offenses being committed in his jurisdiction at that very moment.
My Sonic did not come with a front bracket or any visible place to mount a front plate. When I talked to my dealer, he said they could drill into the front bumper and put one on. I told him that was not going to happen.
Today I went to work on finding a way to mount my front plate without permanent damage to the front bumper. I ended up just using two molly bolts inserted through the lower grill and snugged down just enough to secure the plate. I attached some soft velcro pads to the back of the plate for where it rests against the lower part of the bumper.
It's not as pretty as it was without the plate but at least my Sonic is no longer a threat to the well being of the nation.

Interesting, my RS had the same mount installed at the dealer when I bought mine. I told them I wasnt buying it if it had the mount on it when I left, period. They simply unscrewed it and you cant even see the 4 small screw holes because they're in the sold part of the mesh grille. I see that isnt an option with the regular style front end, has anyone considered a "Hide the Plate" (http://www.hidetheplate.com/)?
My TBSS has the holes from where the dealer drilled into the bumper, drives me insane!

Use the factory screw in the bottom of the bumper in the center and trim the air dam as needed
Although people do it, and get away with it, all the time in front-plate-states, I really don't think it's actually legal anywhere.

I dont think it is either, officially it becomes a "projectile" when stuck on the dash. Do you really want it flying around the interior if you get in an accident? I dont, I have mine "mounted" a different way.

Both my cars had the front plate brackets installed at the dealer. How does one go about removing them when moving to a non-front plate state? It looks like it's held in with plastic rivots or something. Also, I saw some plastic caps that are used for covering holes like these. Does anyone know of a good place to buy them?
Edit: Just found the bumper plugs. They match the color of the car, which isn't really necessary since the bumper is just black plastic.

You will have to drill out the rivets if you are wanting to remove the dealer-installed front plate bracket. You can purchase the black plastic plugs at any auto-parts store.
