If you plan on doing an aftermarket turbo on the dropped in 1.4, then you're still gonna have smog obstacles.

If you'd be satisfied with a modded stock turbo 1.4, you could easily restore it to pass smog.

1.8t...... Smog headache
1.4t with non-stock turbo... Smog headache
Modded stock 1.4t... Mild Smog inconvenience (once the swap is done)

Vince how cross compatible are most turbos for the 1.4t and 1.8? For example how would the 2252 fare as a 1.8 upgrade?

You've crunched the numbers so I figure I'll ask what many are more or less thinking.

I have been going over numbers and talked to Preloader a little about the 2252. I still need to talk to Dave, but to me it seems as though the GT2252 will provide the numbers I am after to meet my goal. My goal also involves a stronger bottom end though.

Try $200. That used to be the going rate to grease a smog tech to squeeze you around the law.

But it's getting harder and harder these days. They use to just sniff another car and enter your VIN. Now their computer must be plugged into your OBD so it can see your RPMs among other readings to confirm that they match the sniffer.

The only last frontier is having a friend with DMV connections that can clear you of Smog through the system.

All this stuff is extremely illegal, and carries huge consequences. $200 isn't worth losing your job to most of these people.

Or wait the additional year to year and a half and get the DI 1.6T Chevy has announced for the Sonic.

Of course one reason for adding fi to the 1.8 would be to see for yourself what can be done, so if you are so inclined then I say go for it.

I agree with your theory. I would rather have a one of a kind vs a showroom animal

That's not to say you can't improve on a 1.6T DI and take it beyond the stock limitations. But the 1.4T's here now, and I'll have 2 years of aggressive modding built up by the time the 1.6's arrive.

I don't doubt that 2 years after that, there will be 1.6T's with power levels that I won't be close to touching. But now we're talking 4 years away. My mind doesn't look that far ahead unless it's regarding retirement investments.

Over here on Toronto, they just started to do this new emmision test. But for cars 98 or older, they are still doing the old way so on my 96 civic, it used to be OBD2A, i have converted it to OBD1 so im safe on that one. On my 91 civic, it doesnt need any test because its over 20yrs old. lol

I think its for cars that are OBD2B and newer which was introduced in 99.

yup and even with a will 1.6T....i have displacement so a well built 1.8T can still make more power...in theory....or just swap in a astra vxr 2.0T and call it a day lol
