You are legally and morally responsible for EVERY shot you take. Do you want to be responsible for a bullet that may or may not ricochet? Did you know that sometimes bullets can bounce over backstops at a range? That is why there are heavy regulations on how they are built.
Having been at the range when this has happened (not every person that owns a gun can manage to actually hit the backstop...) it is not something I would ever want to be exposed to on the street. Yes bullet splatter hurts like hell and I dont like finding a deformed chunk of lead at my feet when it wasnt there a moment ago.
I do not and never have thought that a warning shot was a good, safe, or logical action to take in a situation that would necessitate the drawing of a firearm. If I need to draw my firearm it will either be used if teh threat continues, or be reholstered if the threat retreats. Warning shots are assault with a deadly weapon according to most states and I have no problem with that.
Also, having been to places where I was 100% responsible for where my bullet went once it left the muzzle I am always aware of what is behind my target or the game I am after.
