Guttural gurgle noise..

I have the mpfab intake along with my trifecta tune and a forge bov. Sometimes if I don't give my engine enough gas to make the bov pop my engine will make this deep gurgle noise. It's not very loud but it worries me. It only does it when feathering the throttle at sub 10mph. Any ideas?

Compressor surge? If the BOV isn't opening and you're making even small amounts of boost and suddenly let off then all the forced air has to make its way back out the intake side of the turbo.

Is there something I can do to relieve it, or am I forced to have to give it more gas so the valve releases?

Is there an adjustment on the BOV? Could be a hard spring. Sounds like you may need to try a new BOV. Where do you have the vacuum line plumbed in to? Any chance there is an obstruction in your vac lines? Or the vac lines are collapsing on themselves?

The only adjustment is the spring, which is the stock one in the bov, there is a stronger spring but that's it. I have the forge bov.. and it works great for everybody else. I didn't mess with the vac line much, just the install.. I will check it before I drive next to make sure it LOOKS ok. I messed with it and I can make the noise any time by not getting enough boost and releasing the pedal :(

I have a similar setup: forge bov and DDMworks intake. My sonic makes the exact same noises, and I was originally concerned about compressor surge as well.

There was some discussion about this in one of the bov threads, and the general consensus was that this is normal behavior and not damaging to the turbo. This is occurring during vacuum or very very low boost (insufficient to generate release pressure) and being so close to atmosphere it's not really generating mechanical stress. It also seems to come down to the semantics of compressor surge versus turbo flutter...

Happy to be corrected if I'm wrong, just passing along what I've read and also that the noises you're hearing aren't something unique to your setup. Once I read so many more knowledgable people speak up about it, I actually now enjoy hearing the gurgle and associated exhaust burble when I'm tooling around in parking lots and whatnot.

Isn't the flutter sound just the air coming back at the turbo compressor blades being amplified via the intake tract via the partially open BOV and maybe even the air filter? It's my understanding that this is still somewhat bad on an automotive turbocharger. The reason for pressure relief valves such as a BOV is to prevent this situation from happening.

May not kill the turbo instantly but it sure doesn't help it down the road. My background is aviation systems (F18 Fighter) and from what I recall in class is that any compressor stall/surge causes bad vibrations and bad vibrations lead to an unbalance of a turbine or anything rotating on an axial plane. In this case that might mean that the turbo is vibrating on its axis and since all we're relying on is oil and bushings and not bearings then on a microscopic level a vibration would surely allow the oil between the rotating shaft and the bushing to be squeezed out ever so slightly allowing the rotating shaft to contact the bushing eventually leading to premature failure???

I dunno I'm just saying, but heck I'm not an engineer. I just work with lots of them smart university types, haha:D

You're hearing a little bit of part throttle chuffing from the turbo. The noise is coming through the filter. That's why you hear it on that side.
It's not going to hurt anything. It's normal turbo noise.

Swap back to the stock valve and most, if not all of that will go away. Multiple threads on here regarding the Forge valve and chuffing.
