HELP! How to get your fogs and high beams on at the same time!

Hey guys,

I am wondering if anyone has had any luck finding out how to have your fog lights and high beams on at the same time. I would like to do this as I work overnights, and when I get off early from time to time I would like to have more light in front of me!! I do not want to hit anything especially in the middle of the night.

Now I know I can just cut wires and hook up a switch and control them manually, but i would like to keep everything looking as stock as possible!

If anyone has any suggestions...

Okay so this is how ive done it. My lights have been convertrd to hids and so to eliminate the day time running light function the stock circuit no longer powers the headlights or tje fogs. Your turn signal lights have a constant on when the headlights are turned on so what has been done to mine is to run two relay kits that get powered on by the constant power of the turn signal bulbs. One relay kit for each side that powers one headlight and one fog ligjt. So now the when ever the headlights turn on everything turns on. On a "brighter" note with this mod you can have all six lights on when you turn on your brightz. And i must say its nice!

No idea on the Sonic, but my Blazer also doesn't allow you to have both on at the same time.

I'm not saying that you should not do this, as it is your vehicle; but it is illegal to have both the high beams and fogs lit at the same time. The reason is the combined candlepower of all the lamps exceed federal mandated lighting standards. That is why the fog lamps only work with the low beams, and extinguish with the high beams. I just thought I would share this info with you in the event that you were unaware of the legal issues.

Most states, if not all, only allow so much candle power in lighting for legal use on public roads as was previously stated. Another major reason why fogs and high beams aren't on at the same time is it just isn't necessary. If you have your fog lights on it is because there is fog that is hindering your sight. Your fog lights are used to put light under the fog so you can see past it. Having your high beams on in dense fog actually hinders your sight more by reflecting light off the fog that is as close to your car as physically possible, making it difficult to see at a safe distance. High beams are used when roads are dark and you can no longer see a safe distance out. High beams allow you to see farther down the road so as to give you more time to react to what you see on or around the road i.e. a deer or bicyclist. If you need to see what is far away you obviously have no problem seeing what is near, therefor you do not need fog lights on at the same time.

I installed my fogs my self, I can have all my lights on at the same time. I did not have instruction on the insatall. If you search this forum for the install PM me and Ill let you know what I did to do it. Only thing is, my fogs are on ALL the time thoguh. Personnaly, I like it that way better.
And yes, it is illeagal to have all lights on at once. I know in CT you can only have 2 sets of lights on at a time. As far as any other states i dont know.

This was an easy mod on my Silverado and my cousin's Sierra, just pop a diode between the contacts on the BCM for the corresponding lights. I turned the fogs and the low beams on with the highs using two diodes that cost $1 for a three-pack at RadioShack.

I'm not sure if this mod would work on the more advanced BCM of the Sonic though.

Any update on this question? I would also prefer that the fogs come on with the low beams without having to turn them on manually every time the engine is restated.

I have rewired mine to where all six llights can be ran at the same time. I believe I already posted in this thread how to do it

Run a diode in your fuse box from DRL to your Fogs done deal. Whenever your DRL's are on your fogs will be too.

That may draw too much current off the one wire. U would have to do a diode and a relay.

Im guessing you installed wrong haha Most likely put the wire into the wrong hole that isnt control by the switch. Did you have to reprogram to get the fogs to work? or did u install, start up, and they worked.

high beams and fog lights are counter productive. reason they work only with low beam is to illuminate the road while not impeding vision in low visibility conditions (snow/fog)

As mentioned. In some states it is illegal to have more than 2 sets on at once. I no longer have the ticket, But I certainly remember the $200 I received for this.

I had a old Pontiac with 4 headlight system. I purchased aftermarket fogs and installed them direct (with the rocker switch in the kit). I had the fogs on nearly everytime I had the lights on. I wasnt thinkin one night. I had the high beams on (with the fogs-6 lights in total), and didnt dim for the cop heading at me.

Now my Sonic has fogs, but I rarely use them---OH NOW---I use them on extremely dark roads, fog, rain, ETC. I use my high beams even less often. I have learned that high beams generally get you looking out farther ahead than where you should be looking to safely drive. Usually that stray deer runs out between the high and low beams. It only took 4 deers to prove that to me.

I set out this past weekend to do a mod that would turn on the fogs with headlights. Looked at both fuse panels and realized there is no fuse or relay for headlights, only fog, left and right highbeam. The computer must control the low beams and DRL. Still determined to find a workaround as I hate having to turn them on at the switch for a purely cosmetic reason.

Aside from the fact that fog lights on just about all new NA market vehicles are nothing but a 'status symbol' of sorts, signifying an upper trim level, there's no point to have brights and fogs at the same time.

It's bad enough that people drive with their brights on all the time around here. I don't want to see their fogs at the same time either.

I don't disagree that the fogs are totally a appearance thing, which is why I would like them whenever head lights are on. They do not affect oncoming drivers in any way and the car looks better with them on.
Brights are a completely different issue but with the current hard cutoff line on all lamps I am not sure that they have any effect on oncoming drivers either. I still do not use brights when not necessary.
