Intake Air Temp Question

No matter how you slice it Turbo or not it will be capable of making more hp running cooler air.And there is a big difference in unhood air temps. The intercooler is efficient but a added 100+ degrees F added to ambient temp sure is not going to help matters.Don't sound like a recipe for adding or retaining HP to me !

Not everyone is after power though. I will be running a WAI/HAI on my car for an increase in economy. I am not after power and for what I want a true CAI will probably hurt my chances of hitting my goal.

Increased hp and efficiency and economy tend to go hand and hand.A cooler charge to a point will increase fuel mileage.My cruze tuned durring the winter now on the highway being driven with fuel mileage in mind is just above 40mpg.And its a LT with auto trans.I dont think i can ask for more than that. with summer mix i should get a little more.

Maybe with a small turbo engine. An NA engine will generally get better fuel economy ingesting warm-hot air compared to cold air, and as a result power will go down.

no they do not. it's physics. hotter air will give you better economy.

agreed. it is pretty simple. colder air = denser air = more mass of air = more fuel is required to achieve stoich

Of course thats if timeing advance is not pulled out do to engine knock from a hotter than normal Intake (incomeing air).The E78 ECM loves to keep spark knock at bay.In the winter you may see a slight avantage.But not very likely in spring or hot summer weather.I have watched other vehicles which have other like intake systems.And those numbers can run close to 175 degrees F running on under hood air.If you dont think timeing lead is being cut by knock retard think again.I sure dont want my charge temps up at all with 19 psi boost.

yeah, if you are trying to maximize mpg by boosting around town, you're gonna have a bad time.

30F difference between ambient and intake temps after an hour with the ZZP. I got something cooking.... sorry I'm new to bragging and drinking + accomplishment= excited. Update in a week or 4 (stupid lack of interntet outside of phone)

If driving for economy you wont be running at 19 PSI. You seem to be hung up on the power side of things. Not everyone is after power.


Also, ever look at manifold air temperatures on an engine with a S/C and no heat exchanger? My little M45 would get up to just over 200* on a hot day if run hard. Alcohol injection helps with that issue.
