Interest, Hood Vent

Have you thought about making something to cover the cut on the inside of the hood?
Maybe as an additional part you can add to an order? I know a lot of people do shows and have the hood rough cut covered would probably be preferred.

Yes I most certainly did. I made a piece that was more open and matched the vents outline in reverse. It was supposed to act as a trim for the hood blanket (black foam strip w/ no blanket). I also wanted it to light up a SONIC, or product logo using tiny LEDs with the wire tucked behind the blanket. It was still under development when the vent direction was flipped around, based on you guyses overall consensus.


Anywho, development money is scarce when my hours are, so you will have to wait on it a bit.

I'd donate some to get things going, what you're doing is awesome. Besides Beastlick and Miller nobody has really done anything custom designed for the sonic, so I'm sure people would donate.

Vapor treating had mixed results. Rivet points look good still. Print did not come out 100% may require refinishing if you want it raw.

Still working on a older piece filling and sanding. Will try plastic primer followed by highfill primer followed by paint and clear

For raw prints I would do $150 + shipping includes left and right vents, template for cutting, Turn4Turn Sticker.
For Vapor treated would be $10 extra, gives glossy appearance to rough surface.
otherwise I will hand finish the raw print, for additional cost and wait time.

It would cost less to print out a few pairs all at once than to print out 1 pair per order, but different requirements may force me to do that.

Center piece and underside backing is still being worked on.

Did a temperature reading with my new gauges.

This was after a test drive I did. I installed my other probe under the hood near the battery.

RUN 1 (Probe 1)
Ambient Air Temperature: 79°F
Engine Bay Temperature: 110°F @ Idle, Pre Run 1
Engine Bay Temperature: 89°F @ 72 MPH
Engine Bay Temperature: 145°-155°F @ Idle, Post Run 1

RUN 2 (Probe 1)
Ambient Air Temperature: 77°F
Engine Bay Temperature: 145° @ Idle, Pre Run 2
Engine Bay Temperature: 91.7°F @ 72 MPH
Engine Bay Temperature: 132°F @ Idle, Post Run 2

Engine Bay Temperature: 129°F Engine OFF (Probe 1 Near Battery)
Vent Exhaust Temperature: 142°F Engine OFF (Probe 2)


I will try and move the probe under the hood closer to the vent next time. The probe wire is very short.

If you have access to a stock hood and it's not too much trouble, could you run a series of underhood temperature tests as a control to go along with your posted engine air temps with the vent?

I was going to block the vents with insulated foil tape to simulate a stock hood.

Interesting thread, but can I ask why you put the vent where you did? If I was going to install a hood vent I would put it on the passenger side close to the windshield, where most cold air intakes are positioned, kind of like the Renault Twingo:

to extract heat from the hottest area of the engine bay.

The intake already has it's own fresh air source

There is a low pressure area near the front of the hood that increases the faster you drive. It helps draw out hot air.

That vent on the blue car is more like a scoop. The inlet cone faces incoming air and angles it down into the engine bay. My guess is it takes the place of the gutter just under the windshield you see on most cars that use it to get fresh air into the car. Look up "Cowl Induction" to see how air is forced down from the windshield, and used for engine intake or cabin air.

Fudge! They are 1/8" thick, or very close. I guess steel gauge and aluminum gauge are different #'s. I tried bending the tabs and I can't. Well not by hand anyways.


Time to cnc a jig to clamp on and bend the tabs the way a machine press would. :/

Had to get this done. Bends are not as sharp as i want them. Opened slats to 1/2" gap.
